Scilab is a scientific software package. The version cited here is 4.1.2, which is the latest, though newer beta versions are also available. This freeware is useful for scientists and engineers.
Scilab includes hundreds of mathematical functions with the possibility to add interactively programs from various languages (C, C++, Fortran…). It has sophisticated data structures (including lists, polynomials, rational functions, linear systems...), an interpreter and a high level programming language. Being an open system, user can define new data types and operations on these data types by using overloading.
Some toolboxes available with the system has been listed below:
2-D and 3-D graphics, animation,Linear algebra, sparse matrices, Polynomials and rational functions, Interpolation, approximation, Simulation: ODE solver and DAE solver, Scicos: a hybrid dynamic systems modeler and simulator, Classic and robust control, LMI optimization, Differentiable and non-differentiable optimization, Signal processing, Metanet: graphs and networks, Parallel Scilab, Statistics, Interface with Computer Algebra: Maple package for Scilab code generation, Interface with Fortran, Tcl/Tk, C, C++, Java, LabVIEW etc.. etc..
Scilab works on GNU/Linux and Windows (9X/2000/XP).
Following is the link for downloading the software:

It is preferable to visit the website
http://www.scilab.org
where one can find add-ons, patches etc
Documentation is found in the following link:

Experts in this line are requested to comment about this product. I found reviews strongly supporting this software as it is free but has most functions of 'matlab'. Hence I am sharing this info with you.
