Guidelines for IIMB Management Review Student Essay Competition
IIMB Management Review (IMR) invites post-graduate and doctoral students to participate in the Annual Students’ Essay Competition. Entries must strictly adhere to the following norms:
• Entries for the competition should be in essay form, with an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Raw project reports with numbered sections will not be accepted. • Articles on every aspect of general and professional management are welcome. The criteria for evaluation will include clarity of presentation, adequacy of theoretical and research framework, adequacy of data analysis (where applicable), contribution to the literature, legitimacy of conclusions and wider application. The style must be simple and direct. • Articles should not exceed 6000 words exclusive of charts, tables and other graphics, and the manuscript should be double-spaced, with adequate margins on all sides. Backto- back printing is recommended. • Material should be submitted in the following format: 1. Cover page – article title, author’s name, mailing address (a post office box number is not adequate), phone and fax numbers, and email address. 2. Second page – title, abstract (in about 300 words), keywords (if any), and number of words exclusive of tables and figures. This page should not carry any indication of, or reference to, the author’s name or affiliation. 3. Text of the article, with exhibits, tables, charts and other graphics positioned at the end. Acknowledgements, if any, should also be positioned at the end of the text, before the references. In order to ensure complete equity, it is important that the main body of the article does not contain the name of the author or any other detail of identification. 4. A complete list of references, and other supporting material for use by the judges. 5. A written clearance from the company in the case of company specific essays. • Authors must acknowledge, through appropriate documentation, all the sources they have drawn upon. This includes direct quotations, as well as ideas, concepts, statistics and diagrams. References and notes in the text should be kept to an absolutely necessary minimum and should be listed at the end of the text. The MS Word Endnote system of referencing is recommended. A bibliography or list for further reading may be provided separately. Citations should include full details of the name(s) of the author(s), title of the article or book, name of the journal, details of the publishers, and the year and month of publication, and individual page numbers, as appropriate. The prescribed style of citation for books and articles in periodicals is as follows: Book with Single Author: Manimala, Matthew J, 1999, Entrepreneurial Politics and Strategies: The Innovator’s Choice, New Delhi: Sage Publications. Book with Multiple Authors: Conger, Jay A, and Rabindra N Kanungo, 1998, Charismatic Leadership in Organisations, Thousand Oaks, California: Sage Publications. Article in a Journal: Beardsley, T, 1995, ‘For Whom the Bell Curve Really Tolls’, Scientific American, Vol 272, No 1, Jan, pp 14-17. • Tables, charts and figures should be serially numbered, sequentially following references to them in the text and presented on separate sheets. It would be helpful to provide, in the body of the text at the appropriate places, indicative references to the tables/charts (for example, ‘Exhibit 3 around here’). • Wherever possible, key issues, theories, methodologies, details of sample, case illustrations/anecdotal applications and other background material of a historical or collateral nature should be presented in box formats. • IMR follows British spelling and not American (eg: organisation, colour and programme, not organization, color and program) except in the case of direct quotations. • Two hard copies in A4 size stationery and a soft copy formatted in Word on a CD must be submitted. If any other software is used, details should be provided to assist safe retrieval. Material should be formatted in Times New Roman, size 12, single column. Headings must be in bold, subheadings in bold italics and subsequent headings in italics. • Along with the manuscript, authors should provide confirmation that the article is the original work of the author(s) and has not been earlier published, that it has not been sent for publication elsewhere, that the authors cede copyright of the article as finally published to IMR if it is accepted for publication.IMR however grants automatic permission to the authors for using the submitted material in any books or other publications authored or co-authored by them, or edited or co-edited by them. All other usage will be subject to prior written permission of IMR. • The editors reserve the right to modify and otherwise improve the manuscripts to meet the journal’s standards. • A brief biographic description of the author/s should accompany the article. • Authors will receive a complimentary copy of the issue in which their articles are published; they will also receive ten reprints of their articles for their personal use. A regular reprint service is available and further copies as required may be obtained, or prior permission sought for limited and specified reproduction, on payment of prescribed charges.
