Nurturing Excellence
IIT Kanpur has successfully established itself in science and engineering education globally. The Institute supports its brilliant faculty and students, in all possible ways towards scaling ever greater heights in academic excellence. IITK enjoys liberal financial support from the Government of India. However, in order to fulfill its aspirations to become a top school world wide, the Institute needs private funding over and above the government grants.
Annual Gift Programme was launched in October 2005, through which alumni and friends of the Institute can contribute any amount, small or large, annually. This programme pools a large number of relatively small donations into a substantial sum that supports a number of new initiatives for excellence. Proceeds of the Annual Gift Programme are allocated and used exclusively for activities that are not covered by government grants and are aimed at promoting excellence and not for overhead costs or salaries.
Purpose of Annual Gift Programme
The activities presently being supported through Annual Gift Programme include:
International Travel Support to Students - Partial financial support in the range of Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 40,000 is being extended to students for participating in international conferences. During 2006-07, seventy one students travelled overseas to participate in conferences. For details, please visit: http://www.iitk.ac.in/drpg/studentswelfare.htm
Travel Support to New Faculty - To encourage and facilitate participation in international conferences, effective 2006-07, new faculty members are being provided partial travel support up to Rs. 50,000 during the first three years of their tenure at IIT Kanpur.
Travel Support for International Visiting Faculty - Starting 2006-07, partial support is provided to encourage more International Visiting Faculty in the Institute.
Impetus to Patent Filing - IITK encourages filing of patents by covering the costs associated with patent filing (even US patents) using the Annual Gift Programme donations.
SURGE - To promote undergraduate research, IITK has launched Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE) with the assistance of California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA. Under this programme, students of IIT Kanpur and of different NITs conduct 10 weeks of summer research under the mentorship of IIT Kanpur faculty. Also, an exchange programme enables students from Caltech and Ecole Centrale Paris to conduct summer research at IIT Kanpur and vice versa. For details, please visit: http://www.iitk.ac.in/surge/
Cash Awards for Technical Writing - Through this initiative, any IITK student publishing a paper in any journal listed by the ISI Web of Science receives a cash award of Rs. 10,000. During 2006-07, 204 students received a total of Rs. 26.11 lakhs under this programme.
Alumni Merit-Cum-Means Scholarships - The Annual Gift Programme also enables the Institute to provide scholarships to deserving students who are not able to receive support through the limited number of government-funded or endowed scholarships.
In addition, IITK envisages several more such programmes in the near future. These initiatives require considerable financial inputs for which we look forward to alumni support.
