Put your site in front of Yahoo! searchers by suggesting it for inclusion.

Millions of people use Yahoo! to find information, and having your site in Yahoo! Search or the Yahoo! Directory can mean more sales, more conversations with people you wouldn't have met otherwise, and more hits for your web site. However, letting Yahoo! know that your site exists can be a bit confusing. There's a distinction between Yahoo! Search (http://search.yahoo.com) and the Yahoo! Directory (http://dir.yahoo.com), and the process for submitting your site to each is a bit different.

Yahoo! Search

If other sites on the Web link to your site, chances are good that Yahoo! has already added your site to its index. An index is simply another name for the total list of sites that Yahoo! is watching. Yahoo! Search relies on a crawler to find new sites and keep current sites up-to-date. If a site that's currently in Yahoo!'s index has linked to your site, the crawler has probably already visited your site and automatically added it to Yahoo!'s index.

You can see if Yahoo! is already indexing your site by searching for it with the url: meta keyword. Browse to http://search.yahoo.com and enter a query like this:

url:http://insert your site

It's important to include the full URL with the http:// prefix. Click Search; if a result is returned, it means that Yahoo! is already visiting your site periodically and you don't need to submit your URL. If you don't see a result, you can tell Yahoo! about your site for free.

Browse to http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request and enter your site's primary page URL into the form. You'll need to have a Yahoo! ID to submit your site, and you'll have to log in before submitting a site. Once Yahoo! has your URL on file, the Yahoo! crawler will visit your site within a few weeks and make your site available to searchers.

If you operate a site for mobile devices, there's a separate form you can use to submit your site URL at http://search.yahoo.com/free/mobile/request. And if you run a site for kids, you can submit a site to Yahooligans! (http://yahooligans.yahoo.com) at http://add.yahoo.com/fast/add?+Kids.

Yahoo! Directory
While Yahoo! Search tries to include as many sites as possible in its index, the Yahoo! Directory is more like an exclusive club, where sites have to be approved by Yahoo! Editors. Because Yahoo! wants to maintain a highly useful directory, the steps for inclusion are a bit more involved.

To see if your site is already listed in the Yahoo! Directory, browse to http://dir.yahoo.com and search for the title of your site. If you don't see your site among the results, you can suggest your site to the Yahoo! Directory.

The first thing you need to determine about your site is whether it's commercial or noncommercial, because you'll need to pay $299 to submit a commercial site. According to Yahoo!, "If your site sells something, promote[s] goods and services, or represents a company that sells products and/or services," your site is commercial and should be listed somewhere in the Business and Economy category within the directory. If your site is purely personal, informational, or not-for-profit, your site is noncommercial. A banner ad or text ad on your site doesn't necessarily make your site commercial; if you have such an ad, it'll be up to the Yahoo! Editors to decide whether your site is commercial.

Adding a noncommercial site.

The first step to adding a noncommercial site is to find the appropriate category for your site. If you know of some sites that are similar to yours, you might try searching for the titles of those sites within the directory to see how they're categorized. Otherwise, start browsing through the directory at http://dir.yahoo.com for the most appropriate place for your site. If your site is a personal home page, browse to "Society and Culture" People Personal Home Pages. If your site is a web log, you'll want to browse to "Computers and Internet" Internet World Wide Web web logs.

Once you've found the appropriate category, click the "Suggest a Site" link at the top of the page. Choose Standard Consideration and follow the instructions for adding a site. You'll have the option to include a site title, URL, geographic location, and description. If you have suggestions about other categories that your site might be appropriate for, you can include those suggestions in notes to Yahoo! Editors.

Once you've made your submission, the waiting game begins. Yahoo! doesn't guarantee that all sites submitted will be reviewed, and many sites are not included in the directory. If your site doesn't show up in the directory within two or three weeks, you can resubmit your site using the same process. Multiple submissions in a short period of time could exclude your site from consideration altogether. To be guaranteed a response about your site's placement within the directory, you can submit your site as if it were a commercial site, paying the commercial fee.

Adding a commercial site.

To add a site to the commercial side of the Yahoo! Directory, you'll need to use a service called Yahoo! Directory Submit. The service requires a nonrefundable fee of $299 to review a site, with an annual fee of $299 to maintain the listing. Adult sites must pay $600 for review and as an annual fee due to extra work involved with reviewing them. Keep in mind that the initial $299 fee will guarantee that a Yahoo! Editor will review your site, but paying the fee does not guarantee that your site will be included in the Yahoo! Directory.

Once you agree to the fees and terms, you'll need to include your site information, including title, URL, geographic location, description, and any additional information that might help Yahoo! Editors categorize your site. You can also provide a username and password for your site if your site requires membership.

Once you have submitted your site, Yahoo! will respond within seven business days, letting you know whether your site will be listed in the directory. If your site is denied a listing, you can appeal the decision once within 30 days.

Updating your listing.

As your site changes, chances are good that you'll need to update your Yahoo! Directory listing once in a while. You can suggest changes to your listing at http://add.yahoo.com/fast/change.

Yahoo! RSS

Many sites offer RSS feeds of their content, and Yahoo! has some tools specifically for RSS publishers.

The Publisher's Guide contains a wealth of information about RSS, tools for generating "Add to My Yahoo!" buttons, and a form for submitting your RSS feed for indexing by Yahoo!.

As you update your RSS feed, you can notify My Yahoo! that you've done so by pinging the service at this URL:

http://api.my.yahoo.com/rss/ping?u=insert your feed's URL

Doing this will ensure that your readers there will have your latest content as soon as that content is added.
