Offered by Norwegian &Caledonia Training (NCT) at Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI)
Introduction
Searching for Energy Resources today is of paramount importance than ever before for any economy and in pursuit of this search, drilling for Oil & Gas which is one of the most important energy resources, is rapidly growing.
More and more Drilling units with modern technology are being introduced and the number of Drilling units is rapidly increasing. Due to this rapid growth, the need for personnel with the knowledge of petroleum technology, understanding of drilling and well service activity and all the aspects of safety and safety regulations is also growing. The need for trained personnel in the next ten years will be more than 50,000 world–wide and thousands of these hands will be working on drilling units operating in India.
The DWST course opens up a new stream of career option in the ever-growing Oil & Gas Industry.
The Norwegian Government has set standards for training and certification of personnel working on Drilling units and has introduced the certification course in public schools, which is now a recognised standard world-wide. DWST course offered by NCT is in accordance with Norwegian Standards and Competency and upon completion of the program each candidate can seek employment on Drilling units not only in India but also in Norway, Europe and USA.
Career Path
There are several ways to become a Rig Hand. However, the only way to get a strong and safe foundation as a Rig hand, and be ready for the next level training as a Driller and as a Supervisor, is to complete the programme based on the professional skills produced in the DWST Program. The 6 months residential DWST Level 1 at TMI is based on the Norwegian training programme and all the subjects therein. After completing the 6 month Level 1 program and with 2 – 3 year experience starting from Roustabout to Derrick Man, one has to undergo the Advanced Technical Drilling School, which will provide the theoretical competency as a Driller and Supervisor on a drilling rig. The Technical Drilling School is normally completed during a period of three years, simultaneously working full time on the drilling rig and attending courses during off periods. The working experience needed to be an Asst. Driller could be about 3 years and to be a Driller could be 5 years, and approximately 10 years to be a Supervisor.
