BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY Department of Sociology (Sociology & Social Work) National Seminar On Indian Peasantry and Social Power Jointly Organized with DAV College, Varanasi Call For Paper Registration Form

Indian Peasantry and Social Power
Among the available perspectives on Indian Peasantry and Social Power, one unfolds into the thesis that the land-reforms, a major source of economic change, have created great sociological impact on the agrarian social structure. One of the important consequences is in the realm of power structure vis-?-vis Indian peasantry. The abolition of privileges and economic rights of the zamindars and feudal lords has though not succeeded in introducing an egalitarian class structure in rural system, yet it has made a great social impact on the peasantry and motivated it for access to positions of power and social status. This has resulted into a lot of conflicts in the rural areas. The other, on the contrary is based on the assumption that the emerging rural leadership drawn both from the peasant structure and dominant caste and class system has become more conciliatory and pragmatic in orientation. Upper castes and class now hold on to power not by tradition but through degrees of consensus which, though manipulated, is essentially democratic in ethos. Power according to this perspective, no doubt, is held by traditional privileged class, but it is no longer institutionalized by tradition.
Both of these perspectives explore the fundamental change which has taken place in the relational matrix of Indian peasantry and broader rural social system. The seminar proposes to discuss the various sociological dimensions related to peasantry and power. Some of the significant themes of the seminar are as follows
1. Conceptualizing Peasantry
2. Peasantry and Social Power: Theoretical Perspectives
3. Agrarian Structure and relations
4. Women in Peasant Social Formation
5. Peasant Movements in India
6. Globalization and Peasantry
Under this backdrop we invite you to contribute a full length paper related to any of the aforesaid themes. The papers will be published in book form. Scholars are required to send the abstract of the paper latest by July 31, 2008. We hope a creative and interactive sessions that contribute to critical and dynamic engagement with the themes of the seminar.
