Introduction
The University of Copenhagen was founded in 1479 and is the largest university in Denmark. Currently the university has a teaching staff of 2.000 permanent professors and lecturers and a student body of 35.000. The University of Copenhagen has six Faculties: Theology, Law, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities, and Science. The faculties offer programmes leading to three-year Bachelor degrees, two-year Master degrees (graduate level) and Ph.d.-Degrees.
In this brochure you will find a brief description of the rules that apply to applicants with foreign diplomas/certificates who wish to apply for admission to the University of Copenhagen. There is a distinction between being a full time degree student and a guest student. This brochure informs about degree studies only. Please contact the International Office of the University of Copenhagen if you are interested in becoming a guest student (inter@adm.ku.dk).
The rules described in this brochure apply to the University of Copenhagen only. If you wish to apply for admission to other institutions of higher education in Denmark, please contact the institution concerned for further information.
In order to enrol as a degree student you must fulfil the same requirements as Danish students regarding entrance qualifications. Foreign nationals must provide proof of their Danish skills or pass a test in Danish. Students from the Nordic countries are, however, exempted from the language test.
The number of places available each year is limited. For this reason it is not possible to offer all qualified applicants, Danish or foreign, a university place.
How to apply?
Enrolment takes place once a year only, on September 1. The only exception to this rule is the degree course in Economics that usually enrol students twice a year, on September 1 and February 1.
The closing date for applicants with foreign entrance examinations is March 15.
Application form
The application form is available in early February from the University of Copenhagen, other institutions of higher education, Public Employment Service Centres (Arbejdsformidlingen, AF), and www.optagelse.dk. The application form is the same for all further and higher education courses included in the Danish Coordinated Application System.
Admission requirements
Your application will be considered for admission if you fulfil or expect to fulfil the following conditions before July 1:
• 1. General admission requirements: a university entrance examination which is recognized or assessed as comparable to a Danish entrance examination
• 2. the specific admission requirements
• 3. the required Danish language test.
These conditions will be explained in the following.
1. General admission requirements
A) A national recognized university entrance examination from one of the member countries of the European Council, e.g.:
England General Certificate of Education/Secondary Education (GCE/GCSE) A and O levels in 5 different subjects. At least 3 must be A levels.
Estonia Keskkooli Loputunnistus/ Gümnaasiumi Loputunnistus + Riigieksamenitunnistus
Finland Ylioppilastutkintotodistus
France Baccalauréat de l’Enseignement du Second Degré
Germany Abitur
Iceland Stúdentspróf
Latvia Atestäts par vidëjo izglïtïbu
Lithuania Brandos Atestatas (Maturity Certificate)
Norway Vitnemål fra videregående skolen
Poland Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci/Matura
Sweden Slut-/Avgångsbetyg

NB! This list is not conclusive. A conclusive list is accessible on www.ciriusonline.dk under ‘assessment of your qualifications’. Please note that you should always check www.ciriusonline.dk and ask for counselling even though your entrance examination is listed above. There might be important details not mentioned in this brochure.
B) International Diplomas
• Baccalauréat avec Option Internationale (BOI/OIB)
• Danish/French Baccalaureate (DFB)
• European Baccalaureate (EB)
• International Baccalaureate (IB)
and other diplomas/certificates from countries which have signed the European Convention on the equivalence of diplomas leading to admission to universities. Please note that if a university entrance examination or preparatory examination is required for university entrance in the home country, applicants may be required to have passed this examination sufficiently well to be eligible for admission.

C) Apart from the above-mentioned diplomas and certificates, the following foreign certificates and diplomas from the USA may be considered as valid qualifications:
• High School Certificate followed by one year of university or college studies, preferably in relevant subjects.
• High School Graduation Diploma (general academic, university preparatory or honours programme) followed by 3 Advanced Placement Tests (full-year college course) passed with at least grade 3.
• High School Certificate followed by a 2-year Associate Degree (academic programme).
D) Applicants from other countries than those mentioned above will not be considered eligible for admission unless they have completed one to two years of university studies preferably in relevant subjects in their home countries.

2. Specific admission requirements
In addition to the general admission requirements some degree courses require further or supplementary tests in specific subjects. Foreign applicants must also meet these specific admission requirements. An example of such specific requirements may be competence in Mathematics, Natural Sciences or foreign languages, to be demonstrated in the secondary school qualification or in specific entrance examinations. Another example may be a certain grade average in specific subjects. Applicants must include information and transcripts about the level (A/O level, Higher/Subsidiary level, number of years studied at secondary school or university) in relevant subjects. At the University of Copenhagen applicants must fulfil specific admission requirements in the following subjects area: Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, and Natural Science Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry Psychology, Political Science Sociology, and Economics Mathematics Faculty of Humanities (some subjects) English, German, French, Latin or Spanish. For admission in the Department of Musicology you need to pass a test Please note that specific admission requirements may vary from one degree course to another and may differ from one institution of higher education to another. Prospective students are strongly advised to contact each institution for further information. For information on admission to the University of Copenhagen please contact The Central Study and Career Counselling Office on sa-info@adm.ku.dk.

3. Danish language requirements
The University of Copenhagen offer degree programs taught in Danish. This is why all foreign applicants must be skilled in Danish.
Students from the Nordic countries with Danish, Norwegian or Swedish included in their school leaving examination are not required to do a Danish test. However, a course in Danish for Scandinavians at Studieskolen may be helpful (www.studieskolen.dk).
Danish nationals are not required to do a test in Danish provided they can document being native speakers or having learned Danish at school.
All other foreign applicants must pass a Danish language test before being admitted as a university student.
The required Danish test is:”Studieprøven i dansk som andetsprog for voksne udlændinge”.
The test can be taken at Studieskolen (www.studieskolen.dk) or one of the examination-approved language centres. Registration takes place at Studieskolen, Borgergade 12, DK-1300 Copenhagen K or at a Language Centre via the local authorities.
The test comprises two oral and two written examinations and must be passed with at least grade 6 in each of all the 4 examination disciplines. Please note that for Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health and Dental Hygienist the Studieprøve must be passed with at least grade 8 in each of all the 4 examination disciplines.
The Danish test is held twice a year in May/June and November/December. The Danish language certificate must be submitted before July 1. The latest test for students applying for university enrolment in September, is therefore the one held in May/June.
Until further notice, the former Danish Test 2 – State Controlled Certificate of Proficiency in Danish Language will be accepted.
The Danish Test 3, which can only be taken at Studieskolen, is required for Rhetoric.
It is extremely important that foreign students improve and develop their knowledge of Danish throughout their studies.
Only a few Master (graduate level) degree-programs are taught (mostly) in English fx in the Department of Economics and in some of the Natural Sciences. Please contact the specific faculty or department to get further information on this. Admission to a Master degree program requires a relevant Bachelor degree at the minimum.
When to apply?
All applicants with foreign examinations (regardless nationality) must submit the application before March 15.
The application form is available from the University of Copenhagen, a Public Employment Service Centre (Arbejdsformidlingen, AF), and www.optagelse.dk from early February. The application form with all necessary documents must be completed and submitted by March 15.
Applications received after the closing date will not be considered.
The enclosed documents must be officially certified copies (e.g. certified by the applicant’s school or university, an embassy or consulate). If the documents are not in one of the major European languages or in Norwegian or Swedish they must be accompanied (not substituted) by officially translated and certified copies.
Because of the entrance restrictions in some subjects, neither Danish nor foreign applicants are always offered a place strictly on the basis of the results (grade/marks/average) and transcripts alone. Admission will often be based on a general evaluation of qualifications, which may include life experience, work experience or other non-traditional qualifications relevant to the degree course in question.
How will the application be evaluated?
Are you an EU/EEC-national? On the basis of the EU/EEC Treaty on Recognition of Qualification and Access to Higher Education, nationals from the member countries are evaluated for admission on equal terms as Danish nationals with a Danish entrance examination.
Are you a Nordic national? On the basis of the Nordic Treaty on Recognition of Qualifications and Access to Higher Education, other Nordic nationals are evaluated for admission on equal terms as Danish nationals with a Danish entrance examination.
Are you a Danish national? With a recognised international examination (see International Diplomas above) you are evaluated for admission on equal terms as Danish nationals with a Danish entrance examination.
All other nationals with other foreign entrance examinations: You are evaluated on the basis of an individual assessment of your qualifications.
Further information about admission criteria and specific requirements applying to the University of Copenhagen can be obtained from the internet www.studier.ku.dk and in the information folder “Optagelse på Københavns Universitet 2006” (can be downloaded from the same web address).
Please note that the deadline for all applicants with foreign examinations is March 15 and that both general and specific requirements and the required Danish language test must be fulfilled before July 1 in order to be considered for admission.
This also applies to students taking the International Baccalaureate and General Certificate of Education. Some foreign certificates or diplomas are not issued before the closing date for registration July 1. Students expecting to complete their admission qualification before the closing date but who will not receive their certificate until later must submit, together with their application form, a letter from the school confirming that they will be sitting for the examination before July 1. This letter must also include information about the subjects and level of subjects to be taken. In this case the final certificate or diploma must be sent to the admissions office immediately after it has been issued. For obvious reasons, applicants will not be informed whether or not they have been offered admission until they have submitted their official examination results.
When will you know if you’re admitted?
On July 28 you will be notified whether or not you have been offered a place.
Further information
Residence- and work permits: It is only The Danish Immigration Service who grants residence- and work permits. Further information can be obtained on www.udlst.dk
Fees: There is no tuition fee for EU/EEA students. From 2006 all other students have to pay a tuition fee. The amount can vary. Please contact us on www.studier.ku.dk or sa-info@adm.ku.dk for further information on fees.

Scholarships: The University of Copenhagen does not at the present offer financial support or scholarships to foreign students. For scholarships contact ‘Cirius’ - the Danish office for assessment and recognition of foreign qualifications. It is also the information centre concerning internationalisation of all the educational sectors. The relevant Cirius webpage is www.studyindenmark.dk.

Housing: The Danish educational institutions have no residential facilities, and foreign students have to make their own arrangements as regards board and lodging. There are, however, a number of student halls and foreign students are eligible for rooms on equal terms as Danish students. The student halls are administered by:
CIU (Centralindstillingsudvalget), Tuborg Boulevard 12, DK-2900 Hellerup, www.ciu.dk. You can visit their office called ’BoligButikken’ in the Copenhagen main train station.
If you wish to look for a family home you should apply to: Ungdomsinformationen, Rådhusstræde 13, DK-1466 Copenhagen K., www.ui.dk
Since it is very difficult to find accommodation in Copenhagen, foreign students are strongly advised to make own arrangements concerning accommodation before leaving for Denmark.
