JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF ARTS KOLKATA – 700 032 May 23, 2008 Admission to B.A. (Honours) Courses (six semester) Session 2008-20097 Applications are invited from Indian nationals for admission to the First Semester of 3-year B.A. Honours Courses in (1) Bengali (2) Comparative Literature (3) English (4) Economics (5) History (6) Political Science (7) Philosophy and (8) Sanskrit. Eligibility (in terms of aggregate marks obtained in H.S. or equivalent examination): at least (i) 50% for Philosophy, (ii) 55% for Comparative Literature (with 55% marks in First and Second language each), (iii) 55% for Political Science, (iv) 60% for History, & Bengali, (v) 65% for English, (vi)60% (with 50% marks in Mathematics) for Economics, (vii) 60% for Sanskrit (with 65% marks in Sanskrit). (viii) 45% for all subjects under Sports Category, with 25% and 10% relaxation in eligibility for SC/ST and PD candidates respectively. Prescribed application forms will be available on and from May 28, 2008 either at the Indoor Stadium on the University campus between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm (2 pm – 2.30 pm recess) from Mondays to Saturdays (except holidays) on payment of Rs.50/- for each form or by downloading it from the Jadavpur University website www.jadavpur.edu. While submitting the downloaded application forms a bank draft of Rs.50/- drawn in favour of Jadavpur University payable in Kolkata for each form is to be enclosed. Applicants must write their name, address and subject applied for on the reverse of the draft. Admissions under SC/ST/PD quota will be as per rules. Separate application form is to be submitted for each Honours subject. Application forms along with attested photocopies of (a) Mark sheets of Secondary and Higher Secondary or its equivalent examination, (b) age verification certificate, (c) SC/ST/PD certificate in the name of the candidate/Sports Certificate etc, if applicable, issued by competent authorities are to be submitted at the University Indoor Stadium. Only those candidates who intend to apply under Sports quota must submit their applications to the office of the Dean and Secretary, Faculty of Arts (UG Arts Building). The last date for submission of dully filled in application form is June 7, 2008. Hostel accommodation is not guaranteed. There is a provision of full free and half free studentship (15 percent and 10 percent respectively of the intake of students) for deserving students. Notifications regarding written admission test of regular as well as open School/Patrachar candidates, sports trial, dates of interview and admission will be posted on the university website: www.jadavpur.edu and the Notice Board of the Office of the Dean and Secretary, Faculty Council of Arts (U.G. 1. Eligibility (in terms of aggregate marks secured in the Higher Secondary or equivalent examination) a) For Comparative Literature : at least 55%(45% for PD and 41.25% for SC/ST reserved category) in aggregate with 55% (45% for PD and 41.25% for SC/ST reserved category) marks in first and second language each. b) For Philosophy : at least 50%(40% for PD and 37.5% for SC/ST reserved category) in aggregate. c) For Sanskrit : at least 60%(50% for PD and 45% for SC/ST reserved category) in aggregate with 65% marks in Sanskrit. d) For Bengali, History : at least 60% (50% for PD and 45% for SC/ST reserved category ) in aggregate. e) For Political Science : at least 55%(45% for PD and 41.25% for SC/ST reserved category) in aggregate. f) For Economics : at least 60% (50% for PD and 45% for SC/ST reserved category ) in aggregate with 50% (40% for PD and 37.5% for SC/ST reserved category) marks in Mathematics ( not Business Mathematics). g) For English : at least 65% (55% for PD and 48.75% for SC/ST reserved category) in aggregate. h) At least 45% marks in H.S. or equivalent examination is required for candidates under the sports category. ( The candidates must have a record of participation, for at least one of the two preceding years in the International/National/Inter-Zone/Inter-State Inter-district/Inter-University/Inter-College/Inter-School or First Division League/Knockout tournaments.) Students of Bengali and Economics Honours shall study 20 honours and at least 4 extra departmental courses of 50 marks each. For other subjects, students shall study 18 honours and 6 extra departmental courses of 50 marks each from amongst the list of courses given below. However those applying for Bengali (Honours) & Economics (Honours) courses are required to select only two ED courses in Semester I and one ED course each in Semesters II & III. (b) In Semesters I and IV applicants will be required to select one course each from Group A and Group B. (c) Students taking Honours in a particular department cannot take ED course offered by the same department (except for specified courses in Philosophy, Comparative Literature and English). (d) Classical and Christian Background to English is compulsory for students of English (Hons) (e) ED 1.1 and ED 2.1 are compulsory for Economics Honours students. (f) ED1.25 and 3.11 have to be chosen in conjuction by the students. (g) Economics Honours students cannot take ED 2.2, ED 3.2 & ED 4.22 (h) A student can opt for ED 2.3 provided he has already opted for 1.2. Similarly,a student who has opted for 1.3 can only opt for 3.1 Decision of the Admission Committee of the Faculty of Arts in respect of allocation of Extra Departmental courses is final. 3. A separate application form is to be submitted for each subject. 4. Properly filled in application form (affixing thereon a recent passport size photograph duly signed by the applicant) along with attested photo copy of all mark-sheets and admit card ( for age verification) is to be submitted at the cash counter ( Indoor Stadium of Jadavpur University) between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. (2p.m. -2-30p.m. recess) Application forms downloaded from the university website (www.jadavpur.edu) must be submitted with a Bank Draft for Rs. 50/, drawn in favour of “Registrar, Jadavpur University”, payable at Kolkata. Applicants must write their name, address and subject applied for on the reverse of the draft. Any candidate who does not satisfy the eligibility criteria will not be considered for admission, even if he/she appears at the written Test/Interview and is selected by mistake. 5. For candidates under SC/ST reserved category : SC/ST certificate must be obtained from a competent authority in the name of the candidates themselves. Attested photocopies must be furnished along with the application from. 6. For candidates under the Physically Disabled reserved category : Permanent Disability Certificate must be obtained from Civil Surgeon/District Chief Medical Officer of the Health/Superintendents of Government Hospitals. An attested photocopy of the certificate must be furnished along with the application. 7. For candidates under the sports category : Certificates of participation in Sports/Games must be obtained from competent authorities as specified below and attested photocopies must be furnished along with the application form. Inter School : Secretary, District School Sports Association Inter College : Respective University Sports Board Inter University : Registrar of the respective Universities Inter District : Secretary, District Sports Association affiliated to the State Body. Inter State/Zone/National : Secretary of the State Sports Bodies First Division : Leaguge/Knockout - Secretary of the Sports Bodies viz, IFA/BHA/CAB etc. International : Secretary of the National Sports Bodies, viz, AIFA/BCCI etc. N.B. : Participants in Tournaments/Events organized or certified by bodies other than those mentioned above will not be eligible. Such eligible candidates will have to appear at the Sports Trial. Dates times and venue will be notified on the Notice Board of the University. No separate call letter for trial will be issued to the candidates. [ Although the selection under the sports category for any game/event will be made in order of merit on the basis of the score in the trial, seats under the category for the subject of study will be offered in order of merit on the basis of the academic score of such candidates for all the games/events taken together. Candidates under the sports category are advised to apply for, and if necessary appear at the Written Test for as many subjects as they would like to be considered for. Not more than two students will be selected for admission in a particular subject under the sports quota.] Applicants under the Sports category will have to collect a certificate in a standard format from the Head of the Department concerned, certifying his/her appearance in the Written Test (if applicable) and submit the same to the Principal Secretary, Faculty Council of Arts (at the U.G. Arts Building) along with photocopies of the H.S. marksheet & Sports Certificates. P-3 8. SELECTION PROCEDURE : For Economics : On the basis of aggregate marks obtained in the H.S./Equivalent Examination and marks obtained in Mathematics. For Sanskrit : On the basis of aggregate marks obtained in the H.S./Equivalent Examination. For English & Comparative Literature : On the basis of a written test. For Bengali, History & Political Science : On the basis of 60% weightage to the aggregate marks obtained in the H.S./Equivalent Examination, and 40% weightage to the performance in a written test. For Philosophy : On the basis of equal weightage to the aggregate marks obtained in the HS/Equivalent Examination and performance in a written tests. The original Admit card ( for age verification), H.S. or equivalent marksheet, and other original documents (where applicable) are to be produced at the time of the writtenTest/Interview and also at the time of Admission, if selected. 11. Hostel accommodation is not assured The outstation candidates should apply on a prescribed form (price Rs.10/-) for hostel accommodation to the Dean of Students on the day of their admission along with the following documents : (i) Certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended. (ii) Parent’s/Guardian’s income certificate from the employer/appropriate authority( both original and attested photocopy) (iii) Certificate from the appropriate authority regarding the number of family members dependent on parents/ Guardian’s income with attested photo copy of Ration Cards. (iv) Certificate from the appropriate authority for verification of the place of residence ( both original and attested photocopy) 12.
