APPROACH OF JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY TOWARDS RAGGING
Jadavpur University has accepted the guide lines issued by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in connection with the judgement in Civil Writ Petition No.656 of 1998 filed by Vishwa Jagriti Mission Vs Central Government and Others.
The University has also accepted the West Bengal Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institutions Act. 2000 (W.B. Act XIII of 2000) which, interalia, contained the following provisions (for detail, ‘The Calcutta Gazette’, Extraordinary, published by Authority on Monday, May 29, 2000 may be seen) :
1. "Ragging" means the doing of any act which causes, or is likely to cause, any physical, psychological or physiological harm or apprehension or shame or embarrassment to a student, and includes -
(a) teasing or abusing of, playing practical joke on, or causing hurt to, any student, or
(b) asking any student to do any act, or perform any thing, which he would not, in the ordinary course,
be willing to do or perform.
2. Prohibition of Ragging -
(a) Ragging within an educational institution is hereby prohibited.
(b) No person shall participate in, abet, or propagate, ragging in any educational institution.
3. Penalty for Ragging -
(a) Expulsion from the educational institution, if found guilty on enquiry by the Institution against a
complaint lodged by any other student.
(b) Imprisonment of either description upto two years or fine upto five thousand rupees or both.
(c) Any student convicted under 3(b) shall be dismissed from the educational institution in which he /she has been prosecuting his studies for the time being, and shall not be re-admitted to that educational institution.
The university has further accepted in principle that each and every student of the University shall be duty-bound during the entire period of studentship with the University to immediately report to the Dean of Students if any ragging is noticed either in University hostel or in University campus.

READ CAREFULLY Important Instruction BEFORE FILLUP THE Application FORM:
1. Use separate Application Form for Separate Subject.
2. Properly filled in Application Form is to be sent by Post or by hand to the Head of the Department, Adult, Continuing Education & Extension, Jadavpur University, along with requisite Bank Draft of Rs.100/- from any Nationalised Bank for each Course of study in favour of “Jadavpur University” payable at Kolkata. Clearly write Name & Course in capital letter on the reverse of the Draft. No Form will be received after last date (i.e. 16/06/2008). The attested photo copies of the following documents will be attached with the application form:
a) Mark-sheet and Certificates of Secondary or equivalent, H.S. or equivalent, Graduation and Post-Graduation.
b) SC/ST Certificate in the name of the candidate by the competent authority.
c) Family Income Certificate from the competent authority.
3. The candidate should be brought of the following attested documents along with the Original at the time of admission Test and/or Interview and also in the time of Admission:
a) Original Mark-sheet and Certificates of Secondary or equivalent, H.S. or equivalent, Graduation and Post-Graduation.
b) SC/ST Certificate in the name of the candidate by the competent authority.
c) Family Income Certificate from the competent authority.
The candidate should note the following:
1. Failure to appear at the Admission Test and Interview on the specified date shall cancel his/her candidature without any further reference.
2. Final pass mark-sheet should be submitted within 3 months from the date of admission.
3. Originals and one set attested copies of testimonials should be produced at the time of Admission Test & Interview And Admission after final selection.
4. A declaration from the employer that the candidate shall be granted study leave for 12 months, if he/she gets selection for admission to B.Ed. (Special) be submitted at the time of Admission.

The International Commission of Education for the twenty first century has envisaged education as “one of the principal means available to foster a deeper and more harmonious form of human development and there by reduce poverty, exclusion, ignorance, oppression and war”. It has emphasized one of the principle functions of education is “fitting humanity to take control of his own development. It must allow all people without exception take their own destiny into their own hands so that they can contribute to the progress of the society in which they live, founding development upon the responsible participation of individuals and communities”. The Commission proposes to attain the goal through the Four Pillars of Education: Learning to Know, Do, Be and Live together
Manovikas Kendra Rehabilitation and Research Institute for the Handicapped (MRIH) of Kolkata is a leading institution working for the Children with Special needs over 3 decades. It started in 1974 with just two children with disabilities , striving at a fast pace to reach its goal of becoming a nerve centre of all activities for the differently able in the Eastern Region of India.To serve special need children, professionals/Teachers with special training , is an essential requirement. As mandated, University should follow RCI prescribed Syllabi. In case of difficulty in deciding the number of papers including the practicum, the course content provided in the RCI syllabi need to be incorporated. If needed, some units may be added or combined to satisfy the university requirements. The universities may be permitted to offer specific core papers with the thrust on disability with the approval of RCI.

PREFACE OF B. ED. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION (LOCOMOTOR IMPAIRMENTS AND NEUROMUSCULAR DISORDERS) COURSE IN COLLABORATION WITH INDIAN INSTITUTE OF CEREBRAL PALSY (IICP); RECOGNISED BY R.C.I
IICP is a nationally and internationally reputed non-government organization (NGO) that was established in 1974 to serve persons with cerebral palsy, a condition associated with physical and other developmental disabilities. IICP has its headquarters in 35/1 Taratala Road, Kolkata – 700088 but its training and human resource development programmes have had an impact all over India. In recognition of its contribution to the field of disability and rehabilitation, IICP received the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s ‘Best Institute for Disability’ award from President Dr. Abdul J Kalam and an Accreditation as Outstanding Training Institution from Rehabilitation Council of India both in 2004.
General Information
• This is a five-day a week, full time course from 9:30-4:30 (Mon-Fri) taught mainly in English. There are many lecturers who are non-Bengali and the majority of course material is in Englsih.
• It prepares teachers to work with children aged from 0-18 years who have locomotor impairments and neuromuscular disorders (LI and NMD) such as cerebral palsy. LI and NMD include a range of conditions associated primarily with problems of movement caused by damage to the nervous system. These include cerebral palsy and other conditions that usually lead to multiple disabilities. These problems arise at birth, during childhood or as a result of accident or trauma to the brain.
• The most important point to note about this course is that it provides comprehensive information about how to teach students who have physical impairments with other associated difficulties such as mental retardation, speech and communication problems, epilepsy, specific reading and writing problems and sensory deficits.
• IICP is the only organization in India that offers this full time taught one-year course. It is recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India.
• There is no age-bar.
• The next course is commencing on 16 July 2008 and admissions are in progress in Jadavpur University.
Course Information
The course as of now consists of 9 papers –
(a) 4 common core papers that give a background to education in India and an introduction to disability.
(b) 3 specialization papers on Cerebral Palsy and other LI and NMDs
(c) 2 methodology (school subjects) papers – one focusing on Intervening for difficulties in Language and Communication, and Literacy (Dyslexia) and other on techniques for teaching Reading, Writing, Spelling, Arithmetic and Science.
Practicals: A project based on practical work, reports of placements in specialist centres, community services and schools, and teaching practice.
