E-Passport facility now launched in India. 25.06.2008
E-passports launched today are meant for the diplomats, it would be issued for the category of officials from next month and general people from September next year. Around 80 lakh e-passports would be issued by 2010.
It would have an electronic chip containing all personal data and help us to reduce the procedure at immigration and it also compatible with International Standards and would protect against fraud and security breaches.
A total of 41 countries have adopted e-passports and India is one of the first developing country to have this system
The decision to implement hi tech passport service is taken after successful trails carried out by National Informatics Centre (NIC), The Central Passport Organisation, New Delhi, the India Security Press, Nashik, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur
An e-passport makes the document machine-readable making the passport not only tamper-proof but also enabling quick processing at airports.
e-passports come with in-built security (biometric) features including an IC (integrated circuit) chip embedded in the back cover that stores the data (including photo) that is typically displayed on the photo page of a regular passport.
Besides having entire personal information, including finger-prints, of the person carrying such passport, it will also help the authorities keep track of the movement of the persons.
It is one of the good effort to check misuse of passports in the present format.
