MADURAI(Tamil nadu): Students should play a central role in preventing drug abuse among the youth, said Collector S. S. Jawahar here on Thursday.
While administering the pledge to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Collector said that any deviation from the right track would be detrimental not only to drug abusers’ physical and mental health but also to their very life. Such awareness rallies and programmes would help students who fell prey to peer pressure.
Later, the Collector flagged off an awareness rally, which began at the Collectorate and ended at Corporation Ilango Higher Secondary School. As many as 300 students aged 14 and above participated.
M.P. Janarthanan, Assistant Commissioner, Excise, P. Murugan, DSP, NIB-CID, and M. K. Gajendran of Trishul De-addiction Centre of M. S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Centre. The de-addiction centre and Vaccine Point sponsored the programme.
For bus crew
Trishul De-addiction Centre also organised a camp for a target group Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus crew at Pasumalai. Consultant psychiatrist R. Rathinavel and medical officer Thangamuthu spoke on ‘medical perspective’ and ‘psycho-social perspective’ of drug abuse respectively. Assistant programme director K. S. P. J. Babu spoke on how life of children in the family was affected As many as 80 drivers and conductors participated. Trishul De-addiction Centre has planned to organise programme on drub abuse among self-help group members in Usilampatti and Melur on June 28 and 30.
