Workshop on "Curriculum and Teaching Methodology for Electronics"

CHANDIGARH– June 26, 2008: Department of Physics, Panjab University
organized a one-day workshop on "Curriculum and Teaching Methodology for
Electronics" in the Dept. of Physics, P.U. The workshop got an overwhelming
response as about 40 delegates from different institutions participated.
The subject experts in electronics from Universities and Industry
deliberated upon the curriculum of electronics to be taught to Physics
students at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. The topics included
modem concepts of electronics teaching, new teaching strategies and
experiments, as well as experiences concerning advanced electronics teaching
and learning.

Prof. S.K. Kulkarni, D.U I Panjab University inaugurated the workshop. He
emphasized the role of electronics in all aspects of life and underlined the
need for trained manpower. The
keynote address was given by Prof. G. Holmes from Monash University,
Australia who deliberated at length the optimum curriculum for electronics
course at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and shared his experiences
of designing such curricula for his parent University in Australia. The
other speakers were Prof. J.N. Roy from SCL, Mohali, Er. D.K. Syal,
additional Director C-DAC, Mohali, Prof. Anil Vohra from Kurukshetra
University,
Er. H.P.S. Kang and Prof. M.L. Garg from Panjab University. Prof. R.K.
Kochher, from NIPER, Mohali gave the concluding remarks.

Prof. Manmohan Gupta, Chairman, Department of Physics in his address gave
the background and need for this workshop and described this workshop to be
a precursor to the starting of two new self financed courses of B.Sc. (HS)
and M.Sc. (HS) in Physics and Electronics which the Department is starting
from the current academic session. Prof. Gupta emphasized the three way
benefits of the new course e.g. providing the much needed trained manpower
for the booming electronics industry, providing placement to the students
and bringing economic relief to the University by generating funds.
