Today, many youngsters, especially teenagers succumb to serious ailments like cardiovascular disorders. The underlying reason for these serious problems is stress, says Dr Anand Hinduja
It’s a very special day for Mahesh– it’s his birthday and he has just turned 20. Like any other youngster, he too has some simmering dreams in his eyes. As part of his birthday celebrations, he is enjoying a movie with friends when suddenly drops of sweat start appearing on his forehead. There is a stinging pain in his left jaw that slowly radiates down his chest. This soon turns into a stabbing pain that tightens his chest, and within a few seconds Mahesh collapses on his side. Mahesh has just suffered a heart attack! As he is rushed to the hospital his family and friends are shocked– is this the age to suffer a heart attack? Unlike the popular myth that hypertension (high blood pressure), cardiac arrest, paralysis (stroke), diabetes, etc are disorders for people who fall in the 40 plus age group, epidemiological studies have proved that no age is immune to these lethal diseases. Rising number of youngsters suffering from these diseases is an obvious cause of concern, as the potential causes still remain largely elusive. The most commonly implicated cause, however, still remains‘stress’.“There is an increasing trend adolescents and young adults in cities suffering from cardiovascular disorders, where a definite history of stress and poor food habits can be traced,” says aMumbai-based practioner Dr Deepak Jumani. Most of us are under stress, but we either fail to identify it or find an appropriate solution to it. A busy, ignorant city dweller has simply learnt to live with it. Rising competition in academics often forces students to stretch themselves beyond their capacity, making them victims of a variety of cardiovascular disorders. It may be shocking to know that about 25 to 30 per cent of reported cases are of people below the age of 40. Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a new urban phenomenon that is striking youngsters (predominantly between the age of 18 and 28). Competitive exams being the norm of the day, students are under constant pressure.“Another perennial issue is that,” says Dr Ranjit Mankeshwar, Associate Professor of Preventive and Social Medicine, Grant Medical College and Sir J J Group of Hospitals,“stress is anecdotally implicated in the epidemiology of a variety of chronic diseases. However, there is no valid Indian scale to quantify and measure stress accurately.” Other important causes include genetic predisposition or the fast-growing culture of junk food. Whatever be the cause, the bigger issue is finding a solution. By all means, the best solution is that if we cannot change the scenario; therefore, it’s better to change our perspective. A positive attitude can do wonders not only for our body, but also to our mind and soul. Obstacles and failures are an integral part of life. But one should never forget that there is no defeat unless you accept it. Brooding over failure, denying it or getting depressed is not going to lead you to success. Nevertheless, if you channelise your energy on working upon the reasons for the failure and improving on the same, there is a good chance of it eventually turning into success. It is important to understand that many such trivial issues together lead to several serious ailments. Many young minds like that of Mahesh are bearing the brunt of negativity that is slowly eroding their dreams, aspirations and life at large. It is important to change your outlook towards life, and remember contrary to the popular belief, failure in academics does not account to life at large. There is much more to be explored.
