The skills measured include the test taker's ability to * analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it * analyze relationships among component parts of sentences * recognize relationships between words and concepts Verbal Reasoning questions include: * Antonyms 7-9 questions (Focus on Vocabulary skills) * Analogies 4-6 questions (Focus on Vocabulary skills & Relation between words) * Sentence Completions 4-7 questions (Focus on Vocabulary skills & Understanding the context) * Reading Comprehension 9-12 questions from 2-3 passages (Focus on Reading speed & Understanding the language) IMPORTANT NOTE : As you can see, three out of four sections in verbal ability focus on Vocabulary skills. Therefore, it is very important to be well versed with words that are asked in GRE( around 3000-3500 words). Since the time allotted for Verbal ability section is 30 minutes and 30 questions are given, time management plays an important factor. It is almost impossible for a person to read the entire passage and answer the related questions in one minute. Thus, it is quite obvious that one must need additional time for answering the Reading comprehension questions. This additional time can be gained with the help of other three sections, since the time required to answer an antonym question will not take more than 20 seconds. Similarly the time taken for Analogies would be around 40-50 seconds and time taken for answering Sentence Completion would be around 40-45 seconds IF the test taker is well equipped with very good vocabulary. Therefore, good vocabulary holds the key to success in Verbal section. To increase the test takers vocabulary, one can go through editorials, journals, novels etc. "Barron's :How to Prepare for the GRE " is one such book which provides comprehensive coverage of all the words required to crack the verbal section in GRE. It consists of 50 Word lists. Learning 2 word lists a day is not a tough job but REVISION is key to memorize the huge list of words.
