MANGALORE: Updating the technology and skills is essential to be in the global competition, said K S Madhava Murthy, chairman, Southern India Regional Council (SIRC) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), here on Saturday.
Inaugurating the Continuing Professional Education seminar on income tax and service tax, organised by the Mangalore branch of SIRC here, Murthy observed that unless chartered accountants are technology savvy, it is difficult for them to be part of the competition. Murthy also noted that the advantage of technology is that a professional can serve the clientele anywhere in the world.
"There is a huge potential for CAs in the IT/BPO sector in the coming five to 10 years," said Murthy adding that though the demand for chartered accountants is huge, there are only 10,000 available annually.
He said the institute had changed its curriculum to train youngsters to become professionals by the age of 21. Prof G V Joshi, chairman, department of economics, Mangalore University, speaking on 'India, the developing economy - certain issues', said poverty alleviation needed participatory approach and it could not be achieved in isolation.
