Centre for Women’s Studies,
AMU International Seminar on The Future as Conceived in the Past:

The Evolving Visions of Women’s Emancipation 20-22 October 2008 The Centre invites scholars to participate in the seminar and present a paper on any topic related to the theme of the seminar. The Theme Outline The proposed seminar wishes to focus on a dual theme: first, where have women been placed in general scheme for human improvement, from laissez faire to socialism, and, secondly, what general environment feminists and women thinkers have visualized where women can achieve their greatest emancipation. It is recognized that ideas change, both under their own momentum and under the force of changing circumstances. Modern values alter in substance even when the proclaimed principles, such as Equality and Social Justice, may continue to bear the same names. This can be seen very well in the case of feminism, where often from a demand for female suffrage, the demand for women’s rights have gone on to cover fields like property, employment, affirmative action, political empowerment, religious participation, etc. On the other hand, one can see how in the Indian National Movement, concepts of women’s development under men’s patronage were forsaken under the urge to mobilize women as equal comrades of men in the struggle for freedom.

In the present world, the inexorable expansion of the forces of globalization has enhanced global disparities, and even with the enormous development of technology and production activities, it has actually contributed to food shortages, fuel crises, violence, conflicts and terror. Faced with a strife-torn world, where ideological and normative claims are supported not by the power of communication and reason, but sheer force of arms, one of the important problems that beset scholars and intellectuals today is how to establish spaces of inter-subjective communication and dialogue, across cultural and political divides. There has also been a growing realization that the civil society, a product of liberalism and nation state, needs to be transcended within a more inclusive global framework, in/through what some political theorists term as, ‘the global civil society’.

One of the objectives of the proposed seminar is to critically evaluate the feminist response(s) to the challenges of the contemporary world, marked by global inequities, American unilateralism, terrorism and the equally vicious ‘war on terror’. It needs to be reiterated here that feminist groups have been proactive opponents of these trends, and continue to play an extremely important role, particularly in the third world, in challenging, what Gunder Frank describes as, ‘the development of under-development’, under globalization. At another level, feminism is also engaged in working out a
framework of inter-subjective communication for the institution of global values through dialogue and understanding. The effort is not just to establish, or re-establish global, universal values, but, more importantly, mobilize a global civil society wherein there are inclusive and tolerant spaces for the institution of such norms. We hope to study and assess the role of feminist groups and thinkers in this effort. In the light of the above we will seek to address the following specific themes at the seminar.

1. Reassessing the contribution of liberal feminism.
2. Socialist feminism and women in socialist thought.
3. Images of Gender Equality in radical feminism.
4. Identity and culture in Third World Feminism.
5. Women as part of the Nation: evolving visions in the Indian National Movement.
6. Gender issues in the international forums for human rights.
7. Evolving forms of struggle for women’s rights.
8. Current visions of Women’s Liberation This list is only suggestive, not all-inclusive.

Ultimately, the object is to receive papers which after due processing and refereed selection, can be published. There will be no Registration Charges, and the Centre would be happy to provide local hospitality. We would, subject to the availability of funds, also be able to meet the travel expenses (AC-II /Taxi / Apes Air Fare) with in India of the, invited scholars. Important Dates Last date for receipt of proposed theme of the paper along with a summary in about 300 words. 31 July 2008 Last date for submission of full text of the paper for pre-circulation. 20 September 2008
