Notification for admission into undergraduate courses i.e. B.Sc. (Ag.) Hons. and B.Sc. (Hort.) Hons. is made in Newspapers, normally, in the second week of June every year. Out of total seats available for these courses, 85% of them are filled up on the basis of “marks” obtained in the Higher Secondary (10+2) level examination. The rest 15% is filled up through All India Joint Admission Test conducted by the ICAR, New Delhi. Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary (HS) or equivalent examination in General Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or in Vocational stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biological Science as elective subject and Crop Cultivation or Horticulture & Preservation of fruits as area of study. However, candidates must have to secure at least 60% marks in aggregate in HS or equivalent examination which is relaxable up to 55% marks in case of Schedule Caste (SC) and those having Proficiency in Sports and Games, and up to 50% marks in case of Schedule Tribe (ST) candidates. The minimum age for admission is 17 years as on 1st June of the year of admission. Admission to the 1st year B.Tech. (Ag. Engg.) Hons. Course under Faculty of Engineering is made through Joint Entrance Examination of West Bengal.
The last date for submission of Application form is usually 15th day from the date of declaration of HS results under West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Examination (WBCHSE). After scrutiny of the application forms, a list of eligible candidates for admission (called merit list) is walled up in the Admission & Scholarship Section of the Registrar’s Department, generally, within 10 days from the last date of submission of application form. Admission of candidates is made through counseling held at Mohanpur campus for both the courses based on the merit list and after verification of their original mark sheet, age proof, income certificate, residential certificate, testimonials from the school Headmaster, SC/ST certificates and Sports certificates (whichever is applicable), etc. Students who are the residents of other States, they shall have to enclosed a certificate from the State Agricultural University of his/her state declaring that they have provisions of 15% seats in UG and 25% seats in PG courses are reserved for the candidates recruited through ICAR-Test.
Admission is normally closed after two weeks from the date of starting of concerned classes, even if a few seats might remain vacant since students get admitted thereafter would not be able to cope up with the course. Academic calendars are given to students at the beginning of the respective term/semester. Registration is done on the first day of class. Attendance is strictly monitored. If a student fails to attend the class during the first week, his/her name is struck off and fresh admission is taken from the waiting list during the second week.
This University is a residential one and all students (both girls and boys) have to stay in the Hostels at Mohanpur Campus. Hostel allotment is done at the time of admission. Hostels are provided because the students have to attend classes from 7.00 a.m. to 10.20 a.m. (in field) and 11.30 a.m. to 16.55 p.m. in classrooms. Hostels are situated very close to the Instructional Farms.
Normally, there are two terms/semester in a year July to December and January to June. The University has 4 weeks’ summer vacation (from middle of May to middle of June) and 2 weeks’ Puja vacation. During the summer vacation, University remains open but classes remain suspended. Academic tours of short and medium terms are conducted for the students during these vacations.
For each course, evaluation is done internally and there are two Short Tests (each of 20% marks) and one End Term (60% marks) examination are held in case of theories. Continuous evaluation is done in case of practical examination. External examiners are called for final evaluation in the 8th Term (programme for RAWE/RHWE). Numerical “grade” is awarded for each course after taking average as per course loads, called Grade Point Average (GPA) in 10.0 scale. For subsequent terms, Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated taking into account the GPA or CGPA of the previous term. The final grade, called Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) is calculated, likewise, taking into account all grades of all courses up to RAWE/RHWE programme. Minimum GPA or CGPA required for passing in a course in 5.0 out of 10.00 scale. Failure to secure this grade is treated as “Fail” and the students have to repeat the examination at the convenient of the instructors or along with the subsequent batches. To get the final “degree”, the students have to secure a minimum of 5.5 points in OGPA.
Students have to strictly abide by the rules and disciplines of the Faculty, Hostel and Library as decided by the Faculty Council for PG and UG Studies and the Executive Council of the University. Failure to abide by them shall invite academic and administrative punishments, as the case may deserve. For receiving any payment by the students, production of Identity Card at cash counter is compulsory.
Central Library at Mohanpur has a collection of good number of boos and journals. Besides, it keeps one copy of Dissertation submitted by the students for getting degree from the University. Students only having Library Card are entitled to use Library facilities through reading books/journals in reference selection and getting books issued against their names for a specified period. The Library has computerized Preference Search Section. Besides, newspapers, magazines, storybooks, etc. are available in the Students’ Library in the Faculty and in Hostel.
