Osteoporosis is a disease which is caused by the loss of bone mass in the body. Our body renews bone as it does all the other organs of our body like the skin , other cells etc.

It produces new bone mass for all the old bone mass. Till one is 30 years old our body produces more bones than the replaced mass. After 35 or so your body does not produce more than the removed ones. It will not store calcium either.

The extra calcium gets stored in the body only till one is thirty years ald. After that, our body just stops storing calcium in the marrow of bones. We have to have our daily share of calcium for day to day use.

If the calcium intake is not enough, extra needed will be taken from the calcium stored in our bones. Our bones get weak because of that. When the density gets lesser and lesser, the effects will be noticed by the time we reach our forties.
One will get fractures and broken bones even by a a slip or fall. Sometimes even clicking your hand can get you a fracture of the wrist or knuckles.
So we have to take care of our calcium intake. Dowagers' Hump. loss of height and chronice back pain are some of the symptoms you connect with OSTPRSS.

The things you can do to prevent Osteoporosis are; improve your calcium intake, Quit smoking and to exercise daily and regularly. You need not wait for Osteoporosis to affect you to start taking these preventive measures. You can start now itself by always taking care of the amount of calcium you take as your food. Even if you have been afflicted by this, you can follow these measures to improve your health and alleviate your problems.

Just follow these methods to increase absorption of calcium from calcium supplements. You should not take your supplement with high fibre meals or with bulk forming laxatives as it may decrease absorption of calcium.
Always be sure to take supplements with your meals and not separately.
Vitamin D helps our digestive system to absorb Calcium very well. Spend sometime in the sunlight early in the morning. Too much of sunlight also inhibits absorption of Calcium.

Calcium is present in many of the natural foods, especially dark leafy green vegetables such as spinach, mustard greens, whole grams like Kabuli Channa, black channa, soya beans etc vegetables like Broccoli, cauli flower etc almonds, peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, dates and oranges also contain notable levels of calcium.

Be sure to add Cheese, butter, Margarine, Fortified Milk, fortified cereals, Fish and shell fish to your daily intake of food but do not take aerated or carbonated drinks with your meals. These drinks will not allow your body to absorb calcium.

But always do not depend on the diary foods to give you enough calcium as the protein in dairy foods causes calcium loss, that is more of the calcium is lost than what is taken in.

If you are taking calcium supplements then increase your fluid intake. Otherwise you might get digestion problems and hard stools etc. So make sure of increasing your daily water intake.

Estrogen is a hormone in fertile females which has a major role in preventing osteoporosis, so it is recommended for all post menopausal women to take calcium supplements to prevent themselves from this disease.
