UNIT I HISTORICAL EVALUTION Early airplanes, Multiplanes, biplanes and monoplanes, Developments in aerodynamics, materials, structures and propulsion over the years.
UNIT II AIRCRAFT CONFIGURATINS Components of an airplace and their functions. Differrent types of flight vehicles and Classifications, Conventional Control and Powered controls, Basic instruments for flying- Typical systems for actuation.
UNIT III INTRODUCTION TO PRINCIPLES OF FLIGHT Physical properties and structure of the atmosphere, Temperature, pressure and altitude relationships, Evolution of lift, drag and moment. Aerofoils, Mach number, Maneuvers.
UNIT IV INTRODUCTION TO AIRPLANE STRUCTURES General types of constructions, Monocoque, semi-monocoque and geodesic construction, typical wing and fuselage structure.
UNIT V POWER PLANTS USED IN AIRPLANES Basic ideas about piston, turboprop and jet engines, Use of propeller and jets for thrust production, Comparative merits, Principle of operation of rocket, types of rocket and typical application, Exploration into space.
UNIT VI INTRODUCTION TO AERODYNAMICS Aerodynamic forces on a wing, free coefficients. Generating lift. Momet coefficients. Center of Pressure, Aerodynamics of wing. Sources of drag.
UNIT VII AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND STABILITY Aircraft performance parameters, performance in steady flight, accelerated flight, air planes static stability and dynamic stability – longitudinal stability.
