MV106 BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
1. D.C.CIRCUITS :
Difinition of current, potential, resistance, electrical power, electrical energy – symbols and units – international system of units – Ohm’s law – Kirchoff’s laws – solution of simple circuits using Ohm’s and Kirchoff’s laws. Inductors, capacitors series and parallel circuits.
2. MAGNETIC CIRCUITS:
Definition of m.m.f, flux and reluctance – Analysis of simple and composite magnetic circuits – concept of leakage flux and magnetic fringing – problems.
Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction – Law of electromagnetic force –Fleming’s right and left hand rules – statically and dynamically induced emf’s – self and mutually induced emif’s – self and mutual inductances.
3. A.C. CIRCUITS :
Generation of alternating emg – Average and RMS values – form and peak factors – concept of pharos representation – complex operator ‘j’ – A.C. circuits involving R, L and C – solution of series and parallel circuits – Resonance, series and parallel simple problems – Concept of three phase emf generation. Measurement of power and power factor.
4. ELECTRICAL MACHINES :
Working principles of D.C. generator, D.C. motor, transformer, synchronous generators and motor and basic principles of single phase induction motors and three phase induction motors. 3 phase induction motor and their applications (Basic construction and principles of operation only).
5. MEASURING INSTRUMENTS :
Basic principles of indicating instruments – Moving iron and moving coil instruments – their use as voltmeters and ammeters – Dynamometer type watt meter – Induction type emergy meter – Megger (Basic construction and principles of operation only).
Marine wiring materials and accessories – in marine vessel.
Domestic wiring – Earthing.
