1)Cataract is the most common cause of preventable blindness.Surgery has become much safer nowadays with latest technology.
Other conditions
2)Diabetic retinopathy
3)Age related macular degeneration - this is emerging as very important cause.Drusen & choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM)form in this & may lead to irreversible vision loss if not detected earlier.Patient can't see clearly where he tries to focus & this is called as central scotoma.Bleeding occurs under retina & sometimes in vitreous.
Various Rx options are available now which help in maintaining existing vision & some improvement in vision.Main problem is very high cost of Rx.Available options are-
1)Photodynamic therapy(PDT)
2)Intravitreal inj. of Anti-VEGF agents
3)laser photocoagulation
4)Use of antioxidants as dietary supplements or in tablet form helps in delaying the progression of disease

Hi Drsachin,

I have heard that the persons who are having diabetics will get eye infections so often. Is there any solution to control the same without any medications regularly. Because continuous usage of anti biotics will effect the health in toto. Can you suggest me any exercies or yoga etc. Or any food item which can control the same.

Injuries is one more thing about which one should be careful.Though these are more common in young age ,sometimes old people also get injured.Penetrating & blunt injuries can cause damaging effects on eye like retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, endophthalmitis

Diabetic retinopathy cases may progress & leads to vitreous hemorrhage, tractional retinal detachment, combined retinal detachment, exudation at macula which leads to vision loss
