Mumbai: The University Grants Commission (UGC) will soon prepare uniform syllabi for all universities across the country.

The move is aimed at bringing transformation in the functioning of all universities across the nation to ensure horizontal mobility of students between universities.

"At present, the quality of syllabus varies from one university to another, making it difficult for students to move. A uniform curriculum will maintain the quality of syllabus across the country," an official said.

The UGC has prepared an action plan to increase the quality of state universities and colleges and to fill up the quality gap among universities. As per the plan, B and C grade universities will be brought on par with the A grade universities.

Other reforms by the UGC include, creating new universities out of large universities, internationalization of education like joint degrees and collaboration with foreign universities.

The academic and administrative reforms committee will see in to the methodology for admissions, credit grading system, semester system, teacher assessment, examination, evaluation reforms and the composition of university academic bodies like the senate, syndicate and executive council.

During 11th plan period, the UGC is trying to improve the admission ratio of students by over 5 percent by establishing new universities and colleges besides increasing seats in the existing colleges.

It would also invite public-private partnerships where the private sector will finance higher education. It will also start a drive to identify 370 educationally backwards districts during this period.
