Competence in Software Technology Examination (CST) 2008


CST is a nation-wide examination conducted annually for graduates in any field by C-DAC, Mumbai [formerly National Centre for Software Technology (NCST)], a scientific R&D Institution of Govt. of India, Dept. of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.



C-DAC, Mumbai and Electronics City, Bangalore, formerly known as National Centre for Software Technology (NCST), operate from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Bangalore.



The Competence in Software Technology (CST) examination was launched by the erstwhile National Centre for Software Technology, now C-DAC, in September 1994. It is conducted every year since then.



The main objectives of CST are:

Ø To provide standardised scores to candidates which they can use while applying for employment in the IT industry

Ø To provide support to IT industry in identifying suitable candidates for recruitment

Ø To shortlist candidates for interviews, for employment at C-DAC, Mumbai, Electronics City Bangalore and other centres.

Ø To select students for C-DAC Mumbai and Electronics City, Bangalore’s post-graduate diploma courses i.e. PGDST and FPGDST.

Ø To provide standardized scores to candidates seeking admission to post-graduate courses of other educational institutions



Opportunities arising out of the CST Examination: The CST examination tests a candidate for conceptual knowledge and practical skills. Currently the different levels of the CST examination are used for different purposes as listed below:

Ø Selection test for seeking admission to C-DAC’s diploma level educational programmes viz., 1) PGDST 2) FPGDST 3) Networks & Information Security

Ø Selection test for seeking admission to C-DAC ACTS-Pune’s PG Diploma in Advanced Computing (DAC) – for getting waiver from DAC-CET test

Ø Qualifying test for recruitment at C-DAC centres in Mumbai, Bangalore, and other cities, subject to staff requirement and fulfilment of other conditions

. A degree in any subject or engineering diploma as recognized by a state government or the central government.



2. Final year degree students can also appear for CST 2008 subject to the condition that proof of their qualifying for the Degree shall be produced by the end of December 2008.



3. Software Competence required for appearing for CST ranges from no training (E level) to a degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering/ Information Technology/ Electronics/ Telecommunication/ Electrical/ Instrumentation (G level).

Levels of Examination:

1. E (Entry Level)

2. I (Intermediate Level)

3. D (Diploma Level)

4. G (Graduate Level)


Eligibility Criteria for E & I Levels:

The candidate must meet any one of the following eligibility criteria:

1. A Bachelor's degree in any subject.

2. A diploma in Engineering with a minimum of 3 years’ study after the 10th standard or 2 years’ after the 12th standard. The diploma should be recognised by a state government or the central government as an engineering diploma.

3. Other qualifications recognised by a state government or the central government as equivalent to a Bachelor's degree. In such cases, the candidate should produce proof of Government recognition.
Eligibility Criteria for D Level

The candidate must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

1. B.Sc. in Computer Science or any equivalent Bachelor’s degree in the Computer/IT areas.
Bachelor's degree in any subject and at least 6 months’ part-time training in software technology, comprising a minimum of 15 hours of work per week, covering basic computer concepts and computer programming in the C language.

2. Bachelor's degree in any subject with at least 3 months’ full-time training in software technology, comprising a minimum of 30 hours of work per week, covering basic computer concepts and computer programming in the C language.

3. Graduates in any subject who have undertaken courses on computers, equivalent to the training in software technology requirement as mentioned in (c) above, as a part of their degree requirements. Candidates are required to produce attested mark lists as a proof that they have done at least a one-semester computer course.

4. Candidates who have completed a 3-year, full-time Diploma course in Computer Science or Computer Engineering after the 10th standard. This diploma should be recognised by a state government or the central government as an engineering diploma.

Eligibility Criteria for G Level

The candidate must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

1. Four year Bachelor’s OR Higher Degree in Engineering in RELEVANT STREAM*

2. MCA, M.Sc. (Comp Science.), M.Sc. (IT), MCS, MCM in RELEVANT STREAM*

3. PGDST or FPGDST or APGDST from C-DAC, Mumbai or Electronics City, Bangalore.
Any degree equivalent to a BE in Computer Science or IT



*Relevant Stream = Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Information Technology / Electronics / Telecommunication / Electrical / Instrumentation


Note: Any software course of less than 1 year of full-time study or any software course done in parallel with undergraduate studies will not be considered as equivalent qualification for appearing for the G level.


Admission Procedure: Admissions to courses at C-DAC, Mumbai and Electronics City, Bangalore begin from April 7, 2008 onwards, after the CST results are announced. Any candidate eligible can apply for admission. The candidate must give his/her preference list and locations (preferences may also be given using the on-line form), deposit the 1st installment of fees along with a photocopy of the degree certificate and present the original certificate for verification. Those who do not have their degree certificate at the time of admission will be given provisional admission, on submission of proof that they have taken all the examinations for their degree. They should present proof of qualifying for the degree on or before December 31, 2008. Candidates, who are admitted and are unable to produce proof of qualification, will have their admission suspended and they will not be eligible for any refund. They can apply for re-admission to a subsequent FPGDST course and resume the course on completion of the required qualification.


Candidates will be considered for admission based on merit and the available seats in any location. If a candidate is not allotted a seat in the course of his/her preference, the entire fee deposited will be refunded by May 26, 2008. Admission lists and available seat position at each centre will be available at www.cst.cdacmumbai.in Vacancies, if any, will be offered through second entrance test to be conducted in July 2008.

Those applying for the course admission on the basis of their CST-2007 score (i.e. not appearing for CST- 2008) must submit application form A-2, given in this brochure. A processing charge of Rs. 300/- must be paid with form A-2.



Fees must be paid in full through a Demand Draft crossed account payee drawn in favour of “C-DAC, Mumbai”, payable at Mumbai.



Examination fees are non-refundable and cannot be adjusted against any subsequent CST examinations or utilised for any other purpose.



How to apply: The price of this brochure is Rs.100/-. Those requesting for a copy of the brochure by post (i.e. speed-post) should send a crossed, account payee Demand Draft for Rs.150/- drawn in favour of "C-DAC, Mumbai" payable at Mumbai to C-DAC (formerly NCST), Gulmohar Cross Road No. 9, Juhu, Mumbai-400 049.
