Factfile on Competitive Examinations - Bioinformatics Entrance Examination
Bioinformatics is a multi-disciplinary approach that combines computational and biological expertise to analyze biological data (both genomic and clinical) to advance biomedical research and development. Job prospects are in all sectors of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, in research institutions, hospitals and industry.
Programmes at every level
Study of Bioinformatics begins at the undergraduate level with a few B.Tech programmes open to students completing plus two with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
Master's degree in Bioinformatics is open to graduates such as BSc/BSc (Agriculture)/ BCS/ BE/ BTech/ MBBS/ B Pharm/BAMS/ BHMS and BVSc.
Advance Diploma in Bioinformatics is open to MSc in Physical or Mathematical or Life Sciences or Computer Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biotechnology, Biophysics, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Computer Science or equivalent), MSc (Agri) or M Tech, or MBBS.
M Tech programmes in Bioinformatics are open to engineering and pharmacy graduates, medical, dental and veterinary science graduates as well as postgraduates in science.
Typical Content of the Entrance Tests
Admission to B Tech Bioinformatics programmes is based on an objective type test with questions to evaluate class 11-12 level of knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology.
MSc Bioinformatics entrance tests typically assesses knowledge of physics, chemistry, botany, zoology and mathematics of the 10+2 level, on the one hand, through objective type questions, and on the other, evaluates knowledge of life sciences and physical and mathematical sciences through short answer questions of the bachelor's degree level. In the short answer questions, the applicant may choose questions from the various sections related to the subjects of his/her background. For an Advance Diploma course in Bioinformatics, one may expect a section or paper with objective type questions of the 10+2 and bachelor's degree level in the biological, physical and mathematical sciences, and another section/paper with a mix of questions from the subject matter of physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, computer science and related disciplines of the bachelor's and master's degree level.
Since applications are invited from graduates and postgraduates of diverse disciplines for the master's and advance diploma programmes respectively, the questions in the entrance examinations would not have a bias in favour of students of any particular discipline. Strong concepts in the basic scientific disciplines at the appropriate level would help. Overview of entry into specific institutions - MSc Bioinformatics at Department of Bioinformatics, University of Pune, Pune Website: www.bioinfo.ernet.in
The entrance test is Objective and Subjective in nature in English only. There will be two papers. Paper I (90 minutes) would consist of 100 multiple choice questions (all compulsory) requiring knowledge upto 10+2 level in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Statistics, Logic, Reasoning and English.
Paper II (75 minutes) consists of short answer questions to be answered in 10-15 lines each. Ten questions are required to be solved from the given set of questions divided into:
Section a covering area of Life Sciences (botany, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology, cell biology, genetics, environmental biology, evolution, molecular biology etc) and Section B covering Physical and Mathematical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science) at the bachelor's degree level
The candidate shall solve at least three questions from each of the two sections. Negative marking of T mark for every 4 incorrect answers in Paper I M.Sc (Bioinformatics) at Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi (www.jmi.nic.in)
The syllabus for the entrance test has been indicated. It covers knowledge of Mathematics (Xth Class CBSE syllabus) and Molecular Biology (Concepts in Biology: Characteristics of living organisms, Structure of cells, Energy flow), Nutrition and Metabolism (Information storage and gene expression, Reproduction and Inheritance, Biomolecules : Carbohydrates, Ammo Acids, Proteins, Lipids, Nucleic Acids), Enzymes; Properties, Activation energy, Reaction kinetics, Intercellular Communication, DNA expression and replication, Genes; Cloning, Mutation, X-ray Crystallography,NMR, Genome organization, as also General English (Composition, Expression, Word power-Synonyms, Antonyms, Word Meaning, Word Matching, Literary sensibility, Critical perception), Computer Awareness (Basic understanding of Computers, Programming languages, information and , Communication Technologies and Applications, Current development in IT) and General Knowledge (Current affairs, Basic knowledge About the cross section of subjects -.Science, Geography, Politics, History, Literature etc).
Advance Diploma in Bio-Informatics at Madurai Kamaraj University, School of Biotechnology (www.mkuniversity.org )
he question paper (duration two hours) will be divided into two main parts.
Part A (50 marks) will have f objective type questions at the. level of plus two and degree level. Questions will cover topics from. Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, , Computer Sciences and Mathematical Sciences.
Part B (30 marks) will cover questions from the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science and other equivalent disciplines requiring upto Master's degree level of knowledge.
Advance Diploma in Bio-informatics Calcutta University, Kolkata (www.caluniv.ac.in)
The written examination of one and a half hour duration will have questions from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Computer Literacy. Final selection of the candidates would be based on a total of 100 marks of which, marks obtained in the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology/Statistics at the plus two levels will be calculated as a fraction taking total marks to 40, and 60 from the admission test.
Advance Post Graduate Diploma in Pondicherry University, Pondicherry (www.pondiuni.org ) the question paper will be of the objective type with 90 questions.
M.Tech in Information Technology (Bioinformatics) at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (Deemed University), Allahabad (www.iiita.ac.in ) for BE/ BTech/MSc/ B Pharm graduates is through GATE score but for MBBS/BDS/B.V.Sc & AH/ equivalent there is an entrance test which has objective type questions on topics related to Fundamentals of Computers and Databases, Introduction to Proteomics and Genomics, Languages, Algorithms and tools, Molecular Structure Prediction and Visualization, Computer aided Drug design, Neuro informatics.
M.Tech in Bioinformatics at University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad (www.uohyd.ernet.in ) The entrance examination question paper consists of 75 objective questions out of which 30 questions would be from Biological Sciences and 15 questions each from Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry), Mathematical Sciences (Maths and Statistics) and Computer Sciences.
Note: Admission notifications appear from February onwards for postgraduate and advance diploma programmes. The entrance examinations are usually held in May-June.
