Study of different types of matrix materials, thermoplastic and thermosetting,
study of various reinforcements – long, shot fibers, particulate fillers, flakes.
Review of processing techniques like hand lay up, filament winding, resin transfer
molding, fultrusion. Effect of processing parameters on properties.
Extrusion of Thermosets
Pultrusion, application to pultruded products. Advantages and limitations of
process.
Macromechanics
Macromechanical behaviour of a lamina : Stress strain relations for anisotropic
materials, Engineering constants for orthotropic materials, Restrictions on elastic
constants, Invariant properties of an orthotropic lamina, Biaxial strength theories
for an orthotropic lamina, Maximum stress theory, Maximum strain theory, Tsai-
Hill theory, Tsai-Wu tensor theory
Micromechanical behaviour of a lamina
Mechanics of materials approach to stiffness, Elasticity approach to stiffness,
