The realm of Management takes in itself several things apart from Information, finance, business, marketing and human resources. Amongst the various management courses, the one that’s gaining popularity is Hospital Management. Health is one industry that will never see the dusk as long as the Human race survives That perhaps is the reason why several institutes are choosing that subject. It is aimed at providing management skills to professionals responsible for health services in the country. A major advantage of this course is that it proves to be the ideal option for people who are willing to invest in the health industry and also is the preferred choice of students who do not want to pursue their studies for a specialization after they complete their medicine. Two types of professionals who opt for health and hospital management medical professionals (graduates) and other graduates. While the technical aspects such as procurement of equipment and medical expendables, recruitment and training of staff, management of professionals and research work are supervised by the ‘doctor administrator’, the management and assignment of duties of other staff, maintenance and services as well as security are taken care of by graduates trained in health services management.
Prospects:-
Having completed the course the individual can start as a trainee and rise up to the managerial level. If it’s social service that’s your calling, then certain colleges also offer specialized courses in nursing which can also give you an opportunity to work abroad. People having a specialization in Hospital Management are also the preferred choice for top posts like the CEO, Assist Manager, etc.
Pay scale:-
Hospital Management trainees can hope to take home a pay packet of Rs 6,000 per month to begin with. Nurses can expect a similar pay, depending on the nature of the organization. Doctors (with MD degrees) start with Rs. 12,000/- Rs. 14,000 per month.
Institutes:-
All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi:
AIIMS, New Delhi offers 2-3 year course in masters in hospital administration (eligibility: MBBS with 3 year experience in a hospital) sponsored graduates with 7 year experience in hospital administration.
Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai: Provides 2 years course in masters in hospital/health administration with 50 percent marks and age below 45 years. The candidates must be an MBBS/BSc Nursing/ BA/BCom/BSc Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi, New Delhi offers 3 year (part time) course in health care management (eligibility: medical graduates with 5 year experience in hospital administration and sponsorship).
Indian Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur: Officers a 2 year course in master of Public health/master of health care administration (eligibility: graduates with 50% marks, selection through ALMAT). Programmes offered by this in statute are in collaboration with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.
Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Calcutta: Also offers the postgraduate diploma courses in hospital management to graduates in any branch of medical science/pharmacy/biological sciences. Besides these institutes some universities also offer such courses in hospital and health management which include Punjab University, Chandigarh, Shivaji University, Vidyanagar, Kolhapur, Madurai Kamraj University, Madurai, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Institute of Management Studies, Indore.
