The Montessori system of education was innovated by Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) who was ahead of her time in recognising the important stages of a child's learning and discovering the appropriate ways and means for the growth of a child's creativity. Born in Italy in 1870, Maria Montessori moved to Rome with her parents in 1875 at the age of five. Although her father Alessandro embraced traditional views on female education, it was the more liberal approach of her mother, Renilde Montessori that encouraged Maria Montessori to explore her natural inclination to learn, regardless of the social restrictions placed on women in the male -dominated society of the day. In so doing, Renilde played an active role in her daughter's upbringing, and indeed, the whole philosophy behind what is now known as the "Montessori Method."
A quality Montessori class-room has a busy, productive atmosphere where joy and respect abound. Within such an enriched environment, freedom responsibility, and social and intellectual development spontaneously flourish. In other words, Montessori is a human nursery in which human seedlings are converted into plants and then placed in the garden of life.
The main premises of Montessori education are:
§ Children are to be respected as different from adults and as individuals who differ from each other.
§ The child possesses an unusual sensitivity and intellectual ability, unlike those of the adult, to absorb and learn from his environment, both in quality and quantity.
§ The first six years of life are the most important years of a child's growth when unconscious learning gradually emerges to the conscious level.
The Modus operandi of Montessori Programmes
The approach: Montessori programmes aim to help children reach their full potential in all areas of life. Specially trained teachers, guide and help the child to experience the joy of learning and ensure the development of self-esteem. The system simply provides the experiences from which children create their own knowledge.
Materials: There are especially designed play - learning and material and furniture that speed up learning by increasing the inquisitiveness and creativity of the children.
Positive attitude: Most learning activities are individualized, so that a child engages in a learning task that appeals to her and builds a positive attitude toward learning.
Developing self-confidence: Tasks are designed so that each new step is built upon what the child has already mastered. This removes the negative experience of frequent failure, contributing to the child's healthy emotional development.
Habit of concentration: The ability to listen attentively to what is said or demonstrated presupposes effective learning. Through a series of absorbing experiences, the child forms habits of extended attention, increasing her ability to concentrate.
