PAPER-I : IGNEOUS GEOCHEMISTRY UNIT-I: Definition of a magma, constitution of magmas, generation of magmas, source rock compositions - upper mantle and lower crust, generation of magma from solid rock, magmatic differentiation, magma mixing, assimilation. UNIT-II: Crystallization of magma - crystallization and melting, sequential precipitation, crystal-melt equilibria and Reaction series. Role of volatiles in phase equilibria of magmatic systems. UNIT-III: Petrochemistry, Classification of igneous rocks - chemical classifications, simple binary and ternary systems, variation diagrams, classification of trace elements, controls on trace element distribution, REE, PGE, transition metals. UNIT-IV: Petrology, Geochemistry and genesis of Ultramafic Rocks, peridotites, serpentinites, ophiolites, basalts, gabbros, anorthosites, andesites, granitoids, alkaline rocks, kimberlites, carbonatites and lamprophyres.
