MY VISIT TO DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM

I, Anjali Verma along with nine other students of Air Force School Bareilly and forty other students from different Air Force Stations, got a golden opportunity to visit THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA ‘DR. A.P.J ABDUL KALAM’. This was a chance that only a few people get in their existence, an opportunity that could increase one’s name for whole life. Here I want to present my experience with the president and much more……
It was our Hindi unit test when our then social teacher ,’Mr. Upadhyay’ ,came to me and asked me to fill up a form that carried some personal details. He told me that I was selected for the meeting with the president of India. (Envisage, what would have been your reaction if you were told such news! Its different, unimaginable thought).I stood stunned, shocked. I had never thought so. The next day, our principal told us about the trip. My parents were feeling proud of me. I was full of different imaginings. Well it was a matter of verity that I had once dreamt about the same-about meeting honorable Dr. Kalam. My mother told that to me. I was young and had told her about that). We left for Delhi on 23rd October, 2005, Sunday by night train. It was a happy journey. I didn’t slept the whole night and passed my time gossiping with friends and other seniors, we reached Delhi early at 6:15. We took taxis for our hostels. Our teachers, Mr. Bhatt and Mr.Upadhyay were always with us on the outing. On the way they told a lot of good and erudite thoughts and facts. We stayed separately in girl’s and boy’s hostels at Air Force Station, Sobroto park Delhi. Our meeting was to be held by 2:00 pm, but it was delayed and postponed to 3:30 pm. We freshened up at the hostels and also had our brunch there. By 2:10 pm, we were boarded in a coach to leave for Rashtrapati Bhavan.
We reached there by 2:30 pm. There we saw many gorgeous things. We started from Marble House, a hall containing statues and paintings that belonged to English rulers all made up of marble. Some were that of King George V and Queen Mary etc. Then we entered Art Museum, it contained various paintings by some well known artists. We were told about them by the instructors there. Then we saw Children’s Gallery. It was full of craft items and greeting cards that were given to Dr. Kalam by children. Then we saw India’s Museum. It contained full acquaintance about Indian constitution, Geography, History and Leaders. After this, we saw Indian Culture room. It had all types of items that reminded us of our tradition and culture. We also saw a room that was skillfully sculptured on whole of its ceiling by an amazing painting of people and puppets which looked identical whether being seen from any direction. Then at 2:45, we saw our meeting hall. We had a ten minute meditation there. Then at 2:55, we saw Mughal Garden. It was very beautiful. It is called so because it is designed in mughal style by Mughal rulers. It had pavements and domes all in mughal style. There only, a small part of garden was being used by Dr. Kalam himself for growing therapeutic herbs. He had also made a hut there to relax in open. The instructor told us that he is very fond of music and he devotes his one hour daily playing Mridangam. At 3:00 pm we had small refreshment there. It was a very pleasant moment. There was a live orchestra, some different sweets, vegetable sandwiches, samosas with boiled spicy peas inside it, lemon squash, doughnuts etc. then after having our refreshment; we were made to sit in a hall. Unexpectedly, an instructor called me and told me to stand at the entryway to welcome Dr. Kalam. I was very nervous. My heart was pound with nervousness.
At 3:30 exact, Dr. Kalam came in. He looked very temperate, very simple and also very honest. After greeting one or couple of other officers who had come with us, he came to me, we shook hands, and he asked me my name, my school, my class and even my feelings at that time. It was implausible. He talked as if we were very close friends meeting after a long time. He then sat down serenely in his chair and greeted all the students “Good afternoon”. He then asked about what topics we wanted to talk to him. Then he gave a very- very effectual tongue. He touched every field, every subject in his brief 20 minute speech. Sitting before him seemed like a dream coming true. He mentioned the five main points that were the need of the hour to change and to keep. Those were:-

? Agriculture and Green revolution
? Education and health care(women education)
? Transport and communication technology, Tele-education
? Infrastructure and development
? Self relevancy and critical technology
He gave us various examples for this-
? Silicon valley
? Columbus
? Wright brothers
? Privatization
? Wheel ships
The main thing he wanted to teach us was “everything in this world is possible, what we need to do is uphill struggle accompanied by self confidence” then after his speech, he asked if anyone of us wanted to ask any questions. Every mind had a new motivating question. I also asked one. I wanted him to tell something about part-time jobs. He replied that it was not required until in dire need because they segregate our minds. They hinder our fluent progress in studies. I think it’s true. There were many hands up for asking questions but the busy gentleman had limited time. So he contented us by giving us his website-[www.presidentofindia.nic.in] where according to him we could ask our questions. Then at last we had a photograph with him in Mughal Garden. We were then back on our coach. We went straight to Army inn near New Delhi railway station. We reached there at about 5:00 pm. Then we left for market to have a light snack dinner. We ate aloo tikkis and ice creams and had a long walk in the muddled teeming streets. Then at about 9:00 pm we were boarded on our train. There I met my daddy along with my uncle. I was glad to see them. That time everyone was tired, so all others save me had a snoring sleep. I didn’t sleep that night too but had a short nap for just an hour (the single one throughout the whole journey). Then at about 3:30 am, on 25th October, we were back to Bareilly. I reached home right at 4:00 am. I requested my mom to arouse me at 6 as I had planned to go to school. But I had a very sound sleep that morning. I got up at 11:30.
It was really a very joyous moment. A memorable visit to a world wide known personality. I am proud of myself to have been selected for such a great opportunity. I would call all of it a bit of hard work and good luck. And I would always be grateful to my principal, my teachers and my parents for bringing me up as such a good student, and giving me such a very nice occasion which would always add golden stars in my reputation.
