CAT ANALYSIS 2006 |CAT 2006 (19th Nov 2006) :
Cat 2006 was relatively simpler compared to the CAT exams held in last few years. Especially Quants and DI section were simple and the top scorer in individual section is likely to be one who got all the questions correct in the respective section. There were 75 question in CAT 2006 to be done in 2.5 hours . CAT had never seen such a low number of question in recent past and the duration of test was also longer by 30 minutes. This means that one should have given more importance to accuracy and speed could have taken the back seat. For most of the candidates time was not an issue in this paper and many candidates may have attempted all the questions in the paper.
Cat 2006 had three sections:
1) Quantitative Ability
2) Verbal Ability
3) DI/ Reasoning
Each section had 25 questions and each question carried 4 marks. There were 5 options for each question which also was a surprise element . There was a negative marking of 1 marks for wrong answer. So in this exam if one opted for guess work there were 20 % chance of going wrong and if the answer selected was a wrong one there was 25 % negative marking. So likely there was less of guess work and shortcut methods used this year.
English Section : There were no questions based on grammar, vocabulary or usage. Many candidates could have solved all the questions. A lot of importance was given to logical interpretation and most of the RC questions were inference based. There were 3 passages with 5 questions each and the remaining 10 questions were on fact –inference – judgment and 5 questions on paragraph completion .
Quantitative Ability: Most of the questions were formula based and were much simpler compared to CAT exams held in last few years. There were 10 questions on Arithmetic with most of the emphasis on number system. 8 questions on Algebra, 5 question on Geometry and 1 question on Permutation and Combination. The questions were relatively simple and there may be few people who got all the questions correct.
DI/ Reasoning : There were 5 sets in total and each set had 5 questions in it. There was very little need of calculations and most of the question were based on analytical skills. (UrPercentile.com) It was all matter of understanding the data given and arranging it in proper order and one could have solved most of the questions.
There were couple of errors in some of the test series . In one of the question there were only 3 option given which was by error . In two of the four test series there was typo error in one of the question which changed the answer of the question and there was no matching option. The same question was without any typo error in the other two series
