Weekend Getaways from Hyderabad


Hyderabad does offer some fun weekend getaways, where you can have fun just driving down. Hyderabad is not only about Charminar and Golconda.

Srisailam



Located south east of Hyderabad, This is about 215kms from Hyderabad.

Things to do:
Visit the temple, one of the 12 jyotirlings. A massive fort, with walls six meter high encloses the temple. A cluster of minor shrines within the temple include the 'Sahasra Linga', 'Panchapandava Temples', and 'Vata Vriksha'.

Farahabad viewpoint and a waterfall just off a village midway between Farahabad and srisailam are also great places to see. The three hour boat excursion to some caves is a great experience. The highest of the Srisailam hills, is Sikhareswara Swamy, at Sikharam. The 512 meter long Srisailam dam along with the hydro electricity power project is also worth seeing.

You can book accommodation through the temple authorities.

Nagarjunasagar



Located further south east of Hyderabad - this is a lovely getaway for the weekend. Situated between the cities of Guntur and Hyderabad, Nagarjuna Sagar is famous for its massive irrigation projects on River Krishna which was completed in 1969. One of the earliest hydro-electric one projects in India, Nagarjuna sagar dam is 124 meters high and a kilometer long, making it the tallest masonry dam in the world.

Things to do:
Visit the Ethipothala waterfalls and also plan a boat trip to Nagarjunakonda, an island with a rich collection of Buddisht sculpture and relics

Accommodation: The government hotel Vijay VIhar is beautifully restored and has a commanding view of the lake; rooms are spacious with private balconies.

Farehabad



Located 70 kilometers south west of Hyderabad, known as the Anantagiri hills. This is a very apt for a day picnic.

Things to do:
There's an old temple and well. Should you fancy being more adventurous you can visit kotpalli reservoir further west of the Anantagiri hills, a great place for fishing.

Medak and Pocharam lake



Located about 125 kilometers North West of Hyderabad, Medak is a historical church and Pocharam is a dammed lake. There's a forest belt that you can cross, after obtaining prior permission from the authorities. A good place to drive down in a car or a bike.

Warangal/Yadgirigutta/Pembarthi/Kulpakji



The famed thousand pillar temple, the Ramappa temple and fort, is 160 kilometers from Hyderabad, in the north east. It is the home of the kakatiya dynasty and is also known for the carpet weaving industry.

Things to do:
Visit the Thousand Pillars Temple,Bhadrakali Temple, Ramappa Lake and Temple, Raymond's Tomb. Yadigirigutta which is much before Warangal has a well known temple too. Pembarti also along the route is known for relief work in brass and there is a famous Jain temple at kulpak known as kulpakji.

Bhongir


Bhongir has a Fort located on a hill 500 feet high and covers an area of 40 acres. This fort is only about 51 kilometers from Hyderabad and can be reached in a short drive.

Belum Caves


The breath-taking journey in the 3.25 kilometer Belum Caves, the longest cave in the country, is a great experience. The Belum caves are located in Kolimigundla Mandal of the district, close to kurnool, about 320 kilometers from Hyderabad. They were explored by a British speleologist, Rober Bruce Foote in 1884. The locals have name the stalactite formations 'Kotilingalu' and the tourism departemnt has provided an oxygen blower at Kotilingalu, where people can sit for some time. AP tourism has organized tours arranged to visit these caves from Hyderabad and also from Kurnool.

Other Places


There are many other places like the pillalamarri tree near Mahbubnagar - the massive banyan tree, the magnificent Alampur temples, Uma Maheswaram temple on a hilltop near Achampet. A lot of these places do not have organized tours, so, you just have to search for it and explore it!
