UN as a World Body

This beautiful world, the marvellous creation of God, was not intended to reel under conflicts and wars but to be a place full of peace. Unfortunately, the expectations of the Almighty have been belied by mankind. Every awful battle, every devastating war, every conflict and civil war, as recorded in the history of the world, is the creation of mankind. There is nothing more horrifying than the havoc wrought by the two World Wars. All this chaos demand an agent of peace; a neutral body which would prevent such follies. And the UN took birth on 24 October 1945 with the sole objective of establishing world peace.

Since its creation the UN has not looked back and has dedicated itself to the cause of betterment of mankind. Its role in the Suez crisis, Korean crisis, Angolan crisis, Cuban crisis, Iraq Iran war, Kashmir issue and others are worth mentioning. It has successfully tried to prevent wars in many parts of the world.

The role of UN in bringing about all-round development in economic, social and other spheres of life has been commendable. Its agencies like WHO, UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF, IMF and the International Court of Justice have also contributed a lot for the betterment of human life. Even in the recently concluded UN millennium summit convened by the UN, all the member-states voiced their concern about the impact of war, poverty and disease and pledged to work in the direction of unification of the world keeping in view the upliftment of human life .

While we must appreciate the good deeds of the world body, we will be failing in our duties if we do not touch upon the darker side of its inactivity. Many instances in the past like war, Iraq-Kuwait conflict and the like, have proved that the UN is being marginalised by some nations who are deciding matters on behalf of the UN. This trend is dangerous not only for the world organisation but for humanity as a whole. In many instances, the UN has either played into the hands of super powers or remained a mute and helpless spectator to the unjustifiable actions of some powerful nations. This situation must come to an end, if we really wish to see a world free from ills, interferences and monopolies.

It is high time for all the world leaders to sit and think in the interest of the humanity, to restore the lost glory of the UN, to repair the damages already made to the world body. Let democracy and not the monopolistic veto power of five permanent nations viz America, UK, China, France and Russia guide the UN. Only then will the UN be recognised as the true voice of humanity. Time is ripe for the nations to broaden the horizons of the UN by establishing a world government or world parliament. And this is the ultimate answer to the elimination of all ills from the earth. Let the seeds of war in the minds of men be destroyed and the seeds of peace be sown. Let all people work together to create a new world order free from wars, conflicts, poverty and insecurity.

In spite of some shortcomings, the UN still remains the only hope of humanity, the only medium through which a new world order could be established. No single country should play the role of policeman of the world. Instead, every citizen of the world should play the role of the watchman of the world, with the sole motive of protecting the world from all ills thereby making every one's life happier, healthier and more peaceful.
