As being a doctor I want to clarify some myths against Viagra. In my clinical practice I have seen many young people taking it in order to increase their desire. Due to lack of knowledge and some minconception they think it as it is an aphrodisiac, but the fact is that it is just a drug which is used in illness caused erectile dysfunction.

Due to increased pressure, faster life, changing environment a very common and worrying symptoms of erectile dysfunction has been emerging in the men which carried them away from the pleasure of life causing more depression and anxiety.
Viagra emerged as an answer to this problem in treating erectile dysfunction effectively.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

There are several causes of erectile dysfunction and most common is psychological due to depression or anxiety. Other causes include neurogenic cause which may be due to diabetic neuropathy and there are some peripheral vascular disease causing it.

Mode of action of Viagra

Viagra is actually the trade name of sildenafil citrate a drug which acts by release of nitric oxide thus inhibiting 5 phosphodiesterase which increses blood flow in corpus cavernosus by relaxing it. It is not a hormone but only a chemical substance.

Facts about viagra

Viagra is not an aphrodisiac but only works in penile erection, it doesnt increase libido and has been misused for that quiet often.

It doesnt protects against any sexually transmitted diseases like HIV or any other STDs.

It doesnt protect against pregnancy so before performing sexual act one should take appropriate precaution to prevent pregnancy if they dont want.

When to use Viagra

Viagra should be taken one hour before the act ideally. The appropriate dose is one tablet of 50 mg which can be incresed to 100mg or reduced to 25 mg as and when required.

Adverse effects of Viagra

Viagra may cause flushing, dizziness, headache and blurred vision. Though these are transient adverse effects but in patients with bleeding disorders, diabetes, heart disease and any deformity of penis it can cause serious adverse effect and in these case either it should not be used or should be used strictly on doctors advice.

There is absolute contraindication for person having any hypersensitivity reaction or on any type of nitrate therapy.
