Coimbatore: The affiliation system in the country should be virtually diluted to facilitate all the higher educational institutions to get full academic freedom through 'autonomous' status, N.R. Shetty, president, Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi, said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the regional conference on 'Autonomous Technical Institutions' organized by the society in the city today, he said the British rulers made affiliation mandatory for all colleges.

"Interestingly, while the system has vanished in toto in the United Kingdom, India is still following it. Affiliation mode is non-existent in almost all the countries because globalization has made education globally competitive," he said.

Shetty claimed that the autonomy would enhance the standard of higher education because the academic freedom would enable the managements to change curriculum and produce quality manpower to suit die global industry requirements. The universities usually take 6 to 8 years to change syllabus, he added.

The ISTE president is of the view that creating more universities with focus on affiliation is of no use.

He explained that when institutions get academic freedom, there is a 100 percent possibility of enhancing creativity and confidence of teachers and students and parents because the managements could introduce new syllabus and practice viable modern teaching method.
