Anna university-B.Tech(IT) first semester syllabus

First semester is common for all departments. The subjects are English1, Maths-1,Physics, Chemistry1, Engineering Graphics, Fundamentals of Computing. Each subject consists of 5 units each.

1.Focus on language:
Prefixes and suffixes, synonymns and antonyms, compound nouns,adverbs, gerunds, modal verbs, use of refernce words,relative pronouns,lexical links,prepositions,phrases, clauses, sentence construcion, transformation of sentences using 'though','inspite of','as soon as',use of present participle, subject-verb agreement,question formation,tenses, voice.

prefixes and suffixes to change the grammatical functions and to negate the meanings of words, varied vocabulary related exercises for identifying the contextual meanings of words, correction of errors in text, gap filling , sentence level transformation, clauses,sentence construction, providing contexts for the use of tenses taught, rewriting sentences using the impersonal passive and comparative forms of adjectives.

Oral practice to develop self-confidence,introducing oneself,asking for or eliciting information, describing objects, offering suggestions and recommendations, analyzing problems and providing solutions, preparing for an interview, other general, relevant rhetorical functions.

Predicting the content from the site, skimming the text, understanding the gist, identifying the topic sentence and its role in each paragraph, scanning, inferring/identifying lexical and contextual meanings, technical vocabulary, analyzing information from tablets, note-making, understanding the discourse coherance and organization of texts, learning use of words.

One-sentence definition and extended definition-description, paragraph writing,process description,comparing and contrasting, classifying data, formal letters, essay writing, hints development, expressing causal relations.

Characteristic equation, Eigen values and eigen vectors, properties, Cayley-Hamilton theorem, Orthogonal reduction of symmetric matrix to diagonal form, Reduction of quadratic form to canonical form by Orthogonal transformation.

2.Three Dimensional Geometry:
Equation of sphere, Plane section of sphere, Tangent plane, Equation of cone, Right circular cone, Equation of cylinder, Right circular cylinder.

3.Sequences and Series:
Sequences, Convergence,series of possible terms, test of convergence, alternating series, series of positive and negative terms, power series, convergence of exponential, Logarithmic and Binomial series.

4.Functions of several variables:
Partial derivatives, Euler's theorem for homogenous function, total derivatives, Differentiation of implicit functions, Jacobians, Taylor's expansion,maxima and minima, Lagrange's multipliers.

5.Ordinary Differntial Equation:
higher order linear equations with constant coefficients, method of variation of parameters, methos of undetermined coefficients, equations reducible to linear equations with constant coefficients, simulataneous first order linear expansions with constant coefficients.

1:Acoustics and ultrasonics:
sound classification, musical sound classification,reverberation, absorption coefficient,factors affecting acoustics of buildings and remedies.
ultrasonic production, magnetostriction and piezoelectric methods, flame methos, acoustic grating, industrial applications, welding, soldering and cutting.

2.Crystallography and Non-destructive Testing:
unit cell, Bravais lattice, lattice plane, miller indice, BCC,FCC, HCP, NDT methods,ultrasonic flaw detector, Xray radiography.

3.Wave optics:
Air wedge, Antireflection coatings, Michelson interferometer, types of fringes,determination of wavelength, theory of plane, circularly and elliptical polarized light, photo elasticity, Birefringence, Isoclinic and isochromatic fringes, Photoelastic bench.

4.Quantum physics:
Planck's quantum theowy fo black body radiation, photo electric effect, Compton effect, Schrodinger wave equation, Physical significance of wave function, particle in box.

5.Laser & Fibre optics:
Einstein's coefficients, He-Ne laser, CO2 laser, semiconductor laser, Holography, principle and propogation of light in optical fibre, numerical aperture and acceptance angle, step index and graded index fibres, fibre optical communication system, fibre optic sensors, endoscopy.

2.Surface chemistry and catalysis:
Adsorption, types, Freundlich,Langmulir isotherms, Role of adsorption in catalytic reactions, chromatography, Catalysis, types.

3.Chemical kinetics:
kinetics of second order reaction, problem and example, opposing,parallel and consecutive reaction, effect of temparature on reaction rate, theory of absolute reaction rate, steady safe principle.

Kohlrausch law, conductometric titrations, galvanic cells, emf, electrochemical series, Nernst equation, metal electrodes, determination of pH, ion selective electrodes, polarization, overvoltage, decomposition potential.

electromagnetic spectrum, transition, Beer lambert's law, instruments types for absorption of radiation, colorimetric ananlysis, flame photometry, visible and UV spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy.
