Smoking a Silent Killer

Smoking is surely the silent killer of life. Smoking cigarettes has become so common among adults, and even among teenagers, all over the world, that it can be called a universal evil. Some elderly men smoke cigars and the poorer sections in India smoke "beedis".

In India, smoking is not yet very common among women, but the habit is growing. Once a person starts smoking, it soon becomes an addiction from which it is extremely difficult to free oneself.

Scientific studies have established beyond doubt that smoking is extremely harmful to health. It can, and very often does, cause diseases like cancer, and trigger fatal heart attacks. The nicotine is a poison and is dangerous to various vital organs like lungs, liver, and heart. The life expectancy of most smokers is cut down by many years and millions die every year of cancer and heart attacks.

On account of greater awareness of the danger, this habit is declining in the West, but the tobacco companies make up for their lessening income in the West by promoting accursed habit in India and other developing countries by every means possible. For this purpose, they spend billions of dollars on various advertising tricks like organizing tournaments and rallies, and competitions in sports and games. Captions like "Satisfaction for men of action" lure young males into thinking that to "be a "he - man" they must smoke. So I request every one of you to educate people on the harmful effects of smoking. We all can guide our smoking youth not to smoke and give it up at once
