Location The University of Portsmouth is at the heart of a historic waterfront city on the south coast of the UK. As well as being convenient for travel to London and the airports, France and Spain are just a ferry ride away. The Spinnaker Tower is Portsmouth`s striking new seamark offering stunning views of the south coast.
Investing in the student experience The University of Portsmouth has approximately 19,000 students, 3,500 of whom come from as many as 100 different countries. Over the past 10 years the University has made multi-million investments to improve its teaching buildings and facilities, including new halls of residence, sports facilities and an award winning Students' Union.
The most recent development is the new three-floor library complex. The new library is an eye-catching modern space of more than 10,000 sq. ft. The new features include 250 desktop computers in an enlarged IT workspace area and full wireless internet access throughout the building. Students can use their own laptop computers or borrow one from the University Library and log on to the internet via the secured University of Portsmouth network.
As well as offering access to 17,000 e-journals and substantial collections of e-books through Ebrary and NetLibrary, the Library provides group study rooms, and teaching rooms and seminar facilities. Help desks are located on every floor to assist users to exploit University Library`s vast electronic and hard copy resources to full potential.
Academic strengths The University has an extensive research programme with excellent results in the latest UK Government Research Assessment Exercise. Staff from the institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular sciences in subjects allied to Medicine, Slavonic Studies, Cosmology and European Studies are the University's top performers, each getting a grade 5.
This was closely followed by Portsmouth Business School, the Department of Mechanical and Design Engineering and the School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies who obtained grade 4 for their high level research.

Teaching Excellence The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) works with higher education institutions to define academic standards and quality. They carry out and publish periodic assessments and this can be viewed here: http://www.qaa.ac.uk
Subjects awarded 22 points or more (pre-1995) or `Excellent` (post-1995) are regarded as amongst the best in that subject area. In its most recent assessments the University of Portsmouth was awarded the following scores:

Two Centres for Excellence awarded The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) awarded the university Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning status in two key areas of work. The award winning areas, which benefit from £9m extra funding, are foundation degree provision ('Foundation Direct') and professional development in the health-related sciences (the `ExPERT Centre`)
Courses The University offers both traditional and innovative courses in five faculties: Creative and Cultural Industries, Humanities, Portsmouth Business School, Science and Technology, from Foundation courses through to Research. The University has a strong reputation for the friendliness of its staff and a supportive learning environment.

Facilities The University has 10 halls of residence to choose from and most are within walking distance of the University`s teaching buildings. There are many different styles of student rooms with the option of having meals provided or cooking for yourself. Every room has access to the internet and the internal telephone system. Rooms equipped with varying combinations of micro-computers, Apple Mac workstations, printers (some large format) attached to local area networks, have been established at strategic locations to assist learning and study.
There are numerous fitness facilities within Portsmouth, including the University's own St. Paul's Gym with cardiovascular, free weights and resistance training equipment. Students also have access to the new Nuffield Sports Centre.
Student life At the University of Portsmouth we pride ourselves on the level of support we offer all our students. The International Office team is dedicated to providing consistent care for the University's international students. Our International Student Advisers take pastoral care of international and EU students, provide advice on any issues students wish to discuss and organise events and day trips throughout the academic year. The University`s support network includes Student Housing, the Careers and Employment Service, the Student Finance Centre, the University Nursery, the Academic Skills Unit, the Counselling Service, Chaplaincy and the Students` Union.
All new international students are invited to join a special induction programme, which is held the week before the start of the term. In addition to receiving general advice about living and studying in Portsmouth, students will meet staff from all the support services and teaching staff from their department. The programme also includes academic, cultural and social events to prepare students for the new year ahead. It is an opportunity to meet other new students from around the world and the International Office team, who are ready to welcome and support all international and European students. The University offers all international and EU students free English classes for academic purposes during the first year of their course.
