Avoid 5 Common Mistakes in a Resume

This article describes about the 5 common mistakes that one should avoid in a Resume and how they should be avoided.

Honestly, very few of us know how to prepare a professional Resume that always lands us a Job Interview. The main objective of our resume should be, to attract the reader in just few seconds probably to be effective. Otherwise, the skills, experience and qualifications you have, may not see light. Before you start preparing your resume stuff, you need to have an insight of what makes you tick well. We have the habit of writing some common phrases which we think is complete. But the reality is, it is very much necessary to convert those most common phrases into effective display of information. The following tips could provide you the necessary changes to be made in your resume to find you in an Interview at last.

1.Responsibilities
Instead of giving a vague description of your responsibilities in the projects you have participated, try to be specific by giving number of people managed, budget size, growth, etc and provide some quantitative figures to back up your mentioned skills and accomplishments, which save the time of Hiring manager.

Poor: Responsible for preparing documentation and user guide on deadline.
Better: Prepared five Documentations and five user guides for ten thousand users two weeks before deadline.

Poor: Responsible for production costs.
Better: Reduced production costs by 12 percent over four months.

2.Experienced
There are two approaches to convey your experience by saying that you are experienced at something and by giving details of your experience and platform in specific. Hiring managers would like to hear, what experience you have, but not simply, you are experienced.

Poor: Experience Programming in .NET.
Better: Programmed one online shopping cart and two web based projects for fortune 500 company in .NET.

3.Excellent Written Communication Skills
We may have a habit of making such statements without giving the details or proof to support of statement. If you have it, show in the resume how you communicate.

Poor: I have excellent written communication skills.
Better: Wrote two online support documentation and reduced customer support calls by 30 percent.

4.Team Player
You should explicitly convey some facts in which you worked as a team and how it helped the team to achieve its goals.

Poor: A good team player who can work in small and larger groups.
Better: Worked with developers, interface designers, testers and end users to deliver the payroll software two months before deadline.

5.Successful
Instead of saying merely, ‘I am Successful’, let your achievements, skill set and your efforts speak the success you are talking about. Do not be shy when you want to quote your successes but sell yourself well and boast your best.

Poor: Successfully sold the product.
Better: Increased sales of Payroll software product by 26 percent.

These are few mistakes commonly found in preparing a resume. We often write the past tense of 'Lead’ as 'Lead' which is not, but ‘Led’; small mistakes like these should be avoided. Try to focus as much as on the facts. Give detailed description of the details. And ensure that you are the most qualified, with your qualification.

All The Best,
Regards,
VamC.

It is very much true that "Preparing Resume" is a very difficult job which every person does even before joining into the actual job. Resume is the one which is like index to the employer,
containing the details of the person he is going to take in. It is not that, the employer will assess the candidate based on
the resume but ultimately resume is the basic one to be looked into before stepping into the next step. So, one should be very careful while preparing the resume.

Thanks Vamsi for providing very good and useful information for the people like us.
