"Kodaikanal" means Gift of the forest.This is situated at the southern tip of upper Palani hills in western ghats.This beautiful hill station is one of the famous tourist spot in Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal is at the height of 2133m above sea level in amidst of the wooded slopes,jungles of the ghats with a pleasant climate throughout the year.This hill resort is also known for its hill plantains,homemade chocolates,eucalyptus oil and plums. Kodaikanal has many trekking routes too.The best time to visit this place is April to June.
How to get there?
Kodaikanal is 120 kms from Madurai and 175 kms from Coimbatore and 520 kms from Chennai accessible by road.The nearest railway station is Palani and the nearest airport is at Madurai.
This was constructed by Lt.Coaker (who found the map of Kodaikanal)in 1872.This is a narrow pedestrian path. On the cloudless clear day, one can have a clear picturesque sights of Dolphin nose,Valley of Pambhar, Birds Eye View of Periyakulam and some parts of the city of Madurai.This place fit for strolling, trekking and walking with beautiful sights all around.
This is an artificial star shaped lake of 60 acres built in 1863.It is one of the main tourist attraction.There is a boat club constructed near the lake in 1910.Only the members were allowed till 1929.But From 1932, it was extended to public.Boats and pedals of Tamil Nadu Tourist Development Corporation,Kodai boats,Calton boats are available for hire.Horses and bicycles can also be hired beside the lake for short rides.
3.Kurunji Andavar Temple:
This temple was build in 1936 by an European lady who on coming to India converted herself to Hinduism.The presiding deity of this sacred temple is Lord Murugan. This is 3-5 kms from Kodai lake.In Tamil literature,"Kurinji" means hilly region and "Andavar" means God. The temple offers lovely views of northern plains and Palani Hills.This place is famous for its Kurinji flower which blossoms once in 12 years.
4.Green Valley View:
This place was formerly known as Suicide Point.It is 5.5 kms from bus stand and near the Golf Course.The stairway leading to the upwards to the point is highly commercialized area.One can have a panoramic view of plains and Vaigai dam from this point.
This place is 8 kms from the bus stand .One can see the rolling rocky escarpments rising from the plains by crossing old road after Pambar bridge. The village of Vellangiri can be reached through the bridle path from Dolphin's nose.
The water falls is situated on the main ghats 8kms away from Kodaikanal.The overflow of the Kodai lake comes at 180 ft high falls.This is good picnic spot to spend few hours. We can find many monkeys here.
This place is 21 kms from Kodai bus stand full of natural scenic beauty. This is a hot picnic spot.This lake provides drinking water to neighbourhood town called Periyakulam.
This lies on the eastern side of Berijam lake.This place is famous for variety of flowers,hybrids and rafts.Many ornamental plants are cultivated in a nursery for sale.There are around 325 species of trees,shrubs and cactus. In the month of May,a horticulture show is organised here.There is an Eucalyptus tree of 52 years old and Bodhi tree which adds religious significance to the park.
This museum is 5 kms from the kodai lake maintained by sacred Heart College, Theological Seminary founded in 1895.This museum is one of the best Orchidoriums in the country having more than 300 species of Orchids and large variety of birds.We can also see the Palaiyar tribal people, who live in these hills.A Spanish Priest,Ugartha contributed a major collection to the museum.
Pillar Rocks is located 8 kms from lake . These Pillar Rocks are managed by Tamil Nadu Forest department.Three granite boulders are within city limits standing shoulder to shoulder at the height of about 122 mts. The chamber between these pillars are called Devil Kitchen.There are deep narrow ravines and dangerous caves,tourists are not allowed inside the caves but they can see a few section of caves from far.There is an excellent garden which is accessible to the Public.
Two Telescope houses are set up at Kodai which enable the visitors to have a panoramic view of the valley and the nearby towns.
12.Bear shola Falls:
This is a popular picnic spot located 16 kms from lake.The way to this fall is quite rugged forest.Above the falls,once bears used to drink water which is why it has been named Bear Shola falls.It is best to visit the falls during the rainy season.
This is one of the oldest famous institution built in 1898 ,6 kms from the bus stand. This is situated at 7700 ft highest point in Kodai hills.The kodaikanal terrestrial telescope can view grand panoramic of Sotthuparai dam,Vaigai dam, Periyakulam and Varaha River.The director of Soar Observatory,John Evershed discovered Phenomena of Radial motion in Sunspots Known as Evershed Effects.
The other places of tourist attraction in Kodaikanal are Pambar Falls,Thalayar Falls, Fairy Falls, Glen Falls, Palani Hills and Vembadi Peak.
