Ariyalur-Land of Fossils




Ariyalur is the youngest district in Tamilnadu. It is also known as land of fossils as there are many prehistoric fossils unearthed here.A dinosaur egg dating back to millions of years ago was recently discovered here. Ariyalur,the district headquarters is also a historic town.This Place is famous for the cement industries due to the presence of immense limestone.

How to reach there?
The nearest airport is at Trichirapalli. Ariyalur Railway station is on the Trichirapalli-Virudachalam Road.This place is easily accessible from bus from all the cities of Tamilnadu.

Places of Interest:

Ariyalur:
The Kaliyaperumal temple is the main attraction here.The annual car festival is celebrated in March and April.

Gangaikondacholapuram:
The major attraction here is the Brihardheeshwarar temple built by Rajendra Chola.A big Nandi Graces the front of the temple. Among the sculptures that are pariularly note-worthy is a panel showing Shiva and his companion Parvati crowning Rajendra Chola with the wreath of flowers. Other places which attracts our attention here are the dancing Ganesha,the huge dwarapalakas and a lion-headed well.

Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary:
This sanctuary is spread over an area of 454 hectares. This sanctuary is visited by resident and migratory water birds such as high-flying bar-headed goose,rosy and Grey pelican, White-necked stork, Spoonbill and ibis.November and February are the ideal periods in a year to visit the place.

Tirumanaur temple, Payaraneeswaraswamy temple, Thirumazhaipadi, Jayamkondachoapuram are the other places of tourist attractions and are of historic importance.
