In the recent years television and media has shown an unprecedented growth catching attention of the people from every section of the society. It has become more the means of entertainment and less the means of knowledge and awareness which was initially its primary purpose. Nowadays television has become a necessity as it is the best rated means of entertainment. But the question still remains unanswered whether it is influencing the society positively or misguiding it. It is better to pick up a morning newspaper in the morning. It abreast one with the day today headlines far much better than these news channels.

During the early years of television, Doordarshan was the one and only TV channel that was broadcasted throughout the nation. Every programme had some definite day and definite time. Moreover the news telecasted were accurate and to the point as much is essentially required for brushing up the general knowledge and keeping oneself updated with the current scenario. If we go a little back, we would find transistors as the best means of news and entertainment. I consider that, it was the best means of medium of transmission of news as there was no unnecessary cluttering. As the years passed by, cables and dish TV’s made their hegemony over the television market. Plenty of channels were made easy to watch just at a remote click. It was thought that though everything might change but News and media would remain unaffected and will maintain its accuracy and transparency. But the thought was mistaken in this avaricious world. In the rat Dozens of news channels are available on the TV screens nowadays like Aaj Tak, Zee news, Star news, CNN, IBN7, IndiaTV, Sahara and many others. Frankly speaking, more or less they have also become the means of amusement. They are just derailing from their actual track for what they are actually meant. What is expected is current national, international news but instead bollywood news, sting operations and various other irrelevant topics have gained priority. Instead of making people aware about the nation their motive is to choose and telecast such an issue for the whole day that can gather maximum viewers thus increasing their TRP. Sometimes a cricket match is the issue for the whole day and any fraud Baba picks up the highlight for the whole day keeping the public away from the actual news. Moreover, many times it happens the same news have different views on different news channel thus keeping the general public in a state of confusion.

Recently media displayed one of its shameful acts that too in a very critical situation. I am talking of November 26, 2007, the Taj Hotel attacked by the terrorists in which 180 people died. In this tragic and worse situation where every wrong step could take lives of many the media created havoc. Black commandos who were called for the rescue operations were often interrupted in their operation by the media person. Obtrusive role of media in the rescue was in fact hindering the operation and it can be considered as one of the reasons for the prolonged operation otherwise it could have been finished in a lesser span of time. Moreover every now and then the TV channels were displaying each and every corner of the hotel and thus revealing the positions of the commandos as well. This news was serving as an ease to the terrorists inside the hotel to know the current situation. In fact media instead of helping the commandos was helping the other side more giving them the way to escape. This is a shameful and an act of carelessness of the media. Few foreign visitors, who fortunately were able to survive after this attacked criticized media that they would have taken their lives by telecasting them on the TV channels when they were hiding inside the hotel. It was by chance they were able to leave that place and hide somewhere else otherwise they would have been shot.

I feel that government should set some norms and regulations for the media channels and the content of the news should be relevant. Moreover there should be no obtrusive role of media in such critical situations. Rather a better option would be that the government keeps the control of all news channels in its hands that means there are no private news channels.
