Sumba and Sumbawa:



Sumba and Sumbawa

Description: Rather primitive in looks with large heavy head short muscular neck deep chest and long back

The Sumba and Sumbawa are essentially the same breed but are named after the respective neighbouring islands from which they originate. They are descended from primitive stock, but probably include both Chinese and Mongolian blood The Islands are harsh with poor graz ing, so these horses are robust with good stamina and endurance They resemble primitive ponies with heavy heads in proportion to the body and their dun colour, black dorsal stripe and darker mane and tail. However, unlike true primitives, they have a cooperative temperament and are both fast and agile They are widely used on the islands as pack horses for riding and light draught and also in the fast and furious game of lance throwing .Some ponies are specially trained to dance - they wear bells at their knees and arch ridden by young boys in patterns Set by a dance master moving in time to a rhythm beaten on a drum

Uses: Draught, pack, hacking, also milk and meat
Temperament: Phlegmatic,generally good disposition
Description: Short andstocky muscular neck relatively large head short compact back powerful hindquaters and short legs

Descended from the primitive Przewalski's Horse the Mongolian is one of the oldest breeds In the world. It was probably the horse hidden laden by Ghegis Khan and his army as they swept through Asia and Europe and It retains many of its primitive characteristics . There are four main types, which differ according to the environment conditions In which they developed The largest is the forest type, which is most suitable for draught and pack work . The mountain and the steppes types are smaller, and more suitable for riding,while the desert, or Gobi type is the smallest Some ponies are selectively bred for milk and meat .All the Types look similar with a rather coarse appearance, and they are extremely tough and lamed for their stamina - they have been known to travel up to 120 miles (193km) a day. Prized ponies also have a lateral gait, which is particularly smooth over long distances

Environment: Temperate grassland
Uses: Hacking dressage competitive driving
Temperament Easy-going sociable
Description:Compact body with well-shaped head arching neck short straight back deep chest and short strong legs

The Australian Pony has evolved from a mixture of the breezes imported by early settlers since Australia has no Indigenous breezes of horse The Imported horses mostly came intially irons south africa a and indinesia but later British stock was used to develop the bloodline most notably the Welsh Mountain Pony - as well as the Arab and Thoroughbred .The Australian Pony is excellent for children and novices because of its remarkably even tempartment and good free action , but it also excels In jumping, dressage gymkhana and Pony club eventing. . It is a strong animal , but also intelligent and attractive , It retains many of the traits of a Welsh Mountain Pony, with its contract body neat head and large eves Although the legs are short, they are well shaped. All colours are accepted by the breed registry, except prebald and skew bald
