I was very happy to be in Bangalore and see Ugadhi for the first time in my life. It was a great learning experience. Even though we speak different languages and are located thousands of miles apart, some basic roots in our culture are the same.
Ugadhi, is celebrated as ‘Gudi Padvo’ in Gujarat. Unlike in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Mahrashtra, this is not the Gujarati New Year. However, it is a custom to eat fresh green neem leaves with jaggery on this day even in Gujarat. In some households, it is eaten for nine days beginning Gudi Padvo. This is because this is also the day when Navaratri begins. Gudi Padvo is the first day of the Vikram Samvat month of Chaitra. Therefore, this Navaratri is known as Chaitri Navaratri. It ends on RamaNavami.

Indian culture is so linked with health conciousness. The neem leaves have curative and preventive properties which keep the ensuing summer diseases at bay. Eating of jaggery is also known to have benefits for health as it is much more nutritious than white sugar.

The Vaishnavas eat bajra, jowar or wheat rotis with boiled vegetables or lentils. These are cooked without salt or spices. This helps in purifying the body and the mind. In Vaishnava havèlis, neem leaf and neem blossom juices are offered to Lord Krishna along with jaggery. The Jains also observe Ambèl, where a strict food regime is maintained of low salt and no spice foods for nine days.
The Chaitri Navaratri is supposed to be the original Navaratri until the one celebrated in Ashwin (September/October) became popular.
