Cretinism-congenital hypothyroidism

Cretinism –

This means congenital hypothyroidism. This occurs at birth.

Causes-

1. Thyroid agenesis or dysgenesis

Child will have these features.

1. Coarse facies with large protruding tongue. Mental retardation is seen. Development is delayed. Child is less active.

2. Cool, dry, mottled skin,

3. Short limbs

4. Hoarse cry

5. Hypotony

6. Large open fontanelles

7. Umbilical hernia,

8. Constipation
