5. Smoking also affects lipid levels.

Various types of lipids are there

2. Very low density lipoprotein -VLDL

3. Triglycerides -

High Triglycerides is called as hypertriglyceridemia.

Hyperlipidemia can be familial. So children of parents who have hyperlipidemia are an an increased risk.

What diet one should have?

1. One should eat fish which is cardioprotective. Fish contain polyunsaturated fatty acids ( PUFA)

2. Avoid excess oil which will increase fat levels.

When to check for lipids?

One has to do lipid profile in morning when one is empty stomach (fasting).

Preventive measures

With regular exercise and a balanced diet, one can avoid hyperlipidemia.

Considering major issues coming up with childhood obesity, obesity in adolescent girls, junk food, etc , one has to be careful while selecting proper food. But remember that some amount of cholesterol is essential for normal functioning of certain body tissues.

Risk associated with hyperlipidemia

1. Increased chances of death due to cardiac cause like myocardial infarction. So nowadays preventive cardiology has got a lot of significance.

2. Increased chances of getting joint pain as weight bearing occurs at joints.

3. Obesity in adolescent girls may lead to polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD), hormonal disturbances which may lead to infertility.
