My On-Campus interview experience
|
Hello friends I am Disha.SM. I am final year CS student of Malnad College Of Engineering, Hassan, Karnataka. I got myself recruited by Tech Mahindra. I would like to share the interview experience. Frankly speaking this was the fourth company I was attending since our placement process began in our college. First three companies were TCS, Infosys, Iflex. After my placement in Tech I did attend one more company, and that was MindTree. Let me share my experience with these three companies’ aptitude test. First was TCS. Due to some problem with my registration for their online aptitude test I could not attend the test at the time for which it was actually scheduled. There were few other candidates just like me with some registration problem. After requesting the HR’s and others from the company we were allowed to attend it. The online aptitude test was very easy. We had to attend 100 questions (if am exactly correct) in 60 minutes. And if we cleared this round we could enter the next round. After each round there was no turning back, I mean to say we had to submit the answers of each part and we were not allowed to return back to that section and make changes. But unfortunately I could not get through the test. My friends who could get through it told me that after the test they had GD, Technical round and HR round. Most of them were of the opinion that HR round was the most easiest one. Next was Infosys. They had written test and this included aptitude questions that were really hard to crack. It had lots of puzzles and most of them were from Shakuntala Devi’s book. It also had Comprehension(English) section which included questions to test our grammar, reasoning capability and understanding and this was very easy to solve. But I again could not clear it. Only 14 candidates got recruited and only four from CS department. My friends said they did not have any GD since only 14 were selected and they did not have anything exactly like technical and HR round. Next day the company that was visiting was Iflex. It was the same day when it joined with Oracle. Its aptitude test had 60 questions and the time limit was 60 min. They had negative marking(1/4 per wrong answer). They had fixed some cut off which they did not announce. Since it had negative marking I did not dare to answer all the questions even though they were quite simple. Finally the next day it was Tech Mahindra. I always dreamt of this company but never wished to get into it. So after the presentation we had online exam. We dint have to register our self for the online exam. They had already given us the user id and password. The online exam (aptitude test) was very easy and I was confident. I was able to solve 98 questions out of the 100 questions. Time limit was 60 minutes. Here the best thing was they had separate sections and we could get back to any section at any time and if desired change our answers as well. Following were the different sections. Aptitude, Synonyms and Antonyms, Comprehension. Aptitude section consisted of questions from Problems on Age, Interest, Chain rule, Time and Distance and few others. Once we answered the questions if we were done with we could submit it or else at the completion of 60 min it would automatically get submitted. Once submitted one is not allowed to change it. They also had a timer display on the screen which would show the time once we started answering. After the completion of the test we had to wait for 5-10 minutes for the result. The results were announced and I was amongst those 16 who had cleared the aptitude test. We were then given an application form to fill which asked about our personal details and our objective. They took a copy of our resume. Then one by one we were called for the technical round. After the technical round we had HR round. We did not have GD since only 16 were selected. Technical Round: I was bit nervous until I was called for the technical round. I was nervous because I was hardly prepared for this round. When I was called I was bit nervous but boldly entered in. Only one interviewer was present and that made me bit relaxed. His questions went like this
Interviewer: Introduce your self My reply: I began like this “Good afternoon Sir! I am Disha from MCE CS department. I completed my PU from……” and so on . Then I spoke about my hobbies and my interests. Then during the last part I spoke about my family. While I was speaking he always kept a glance on his watch and my resume. May be this was to check how well I could express myself and how fluent I was. He stopped me in between and then proceeded further.
Interviewer: What are your good qualities. My reply : I am confident, determined, clear in my thoughts and helping in nature.
Interviewer: Can you explain the quality of being determined and clear in your thoughts? My reply: Yes Sir! I was determined to get into Computer Science Engineering stream and I got into it. Since I was clear about my thoughts and my future and determined I took up PCMC(Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computers) combination in my PU level. (he stopped me and fired the next question)
Interviewer: Can you handle a team or do you have the qualities of a leader. My reply :Yes sir! I can handle a team.
Interviewer: Can you explain? My reply: Yes sir! I was an member of the student’s council in my PUC level. I have handled my project team as a project leader.(he stops me and his next question)
Interviewer: How do you handle a team. Do you uses rude methods or? My reply: Sir! In my opinion a team needs complete co-operation of all the members involved. Being a team leader does not mean one has all the rights to do what ever he/she wishes. Team leader manages the team in such a way that all the members are involved in the work and gives no space for blaming each other.(he stops me again)
Interviewer: Will you consider the suggestions of your team members or is that you are always right. My reply: Yes! Of course I will consider the suggestions and opinions of the members. It need not be always true that am always right.
Interviewer: So if you are wrong then? My reply: If am wrong, or if any of the member points out that am wrong I will accept my mistake and consider the suggestion which is correct, consulting all the team members.(he again stops me) Next he proceeds towards asking technical questions.
Interviewer: Give me a list of subjects that you have studied right from first semester I give him the reply and he stops be in between to ask the next question
Interviewer: Which are your favorite subjects? My reply: C Programming and “Analysis and Design Of Algorithms”
Interviewer: What is analysis. I explain He asks me to explain with a real-life application. I explain him “The traveling salesman” problem. He asks few questions on it and I reply correctly.
Next he asks me few puzzles which I answer. Puzzles were like this. “If one can boil an egg in 5 min, how many minutes are required to boil 5 eggs”
“A frog has to climb a 11 meters wall. It climbs 2 meters during day and comes down 1 meter during night. How many days are required for the frog to reach the top of the wall?”
“There are three boxes with label say Apple, Orange, Apple & Orange. The labels do not match with the contents inside. You have to pick a fruit from only one box and tell me which fruit is contained in each box.
Next he asks me to write a C program of my choice and walks out. He comes back after few minutes and am ready with my “Swap program in C(Program to swap two numbers)” He asks me to explain it and asks few questions on pointers.
Next few question on my projects. Interviewer: Why did you opt C for doing the project in graphics instead of C++? My reply: I was more comfortable with C rather than C++.
Interviewer: So does it mean that if you are given a project in our company you will always opt for C because you are comfortable. My reply: It depends on what language the project demands.
Interviewer: So it means you are ready to use any language that we specify. My reply: Yes sir.
Interviewer: Ok. So do you have any questions for me? My reply: Sir! How is life at Tech?
Interviewer: Its good. You enjoy your work; you enjoy a lot. Anything else? My reply: No sir.
Interviewer: You may leave. I thank him and come out.
Next round was HR round and by now I had completely gained confidence and was sure I would clear this round as well. I enter and wish the HR and he wishes me back with a sweet smile. He asks me to speak about myself which I does confidently.
HR: You have mentioned here that reading is your hobby. So what kind of books do you read? Me: I read novels and books like Reader’s Digest, Wisdom, Magazines like The Week and few others.
HR: What is function overloading in C++? Can you write a simple program? Me: Yes sir! (I write a simple C++ code to show function overloading and explain)
HR: What is Zombie process? (This was asked because of the project that I had mentioned in my resume) I reply to his answer and its over.
My HR round was only this much. And finally I was called to sign the form which confirmed that I had been selected. Before signing the form I was asked few questions What do you know about Tech Mahindra? I tell him frankly that I hardly know anything about Tech Mahindra.
Are you ready to travel and go to any location that we assign you to? Yes sir!
Do you have passport? Yes sir! I do have.
Then finally I sign the form and am one among those 14 candidates to have cleared the tests and get selected.
