A visit to Sanjay Gandhi National Park
We left our home at 7.15 and reached
Nature Information Center (NIC) a part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP)
at 8.15. SGNP is a combined effort ot htree organizations that is Forest Department of Maharashtra, BG and BNHS. Before Independence, it was known as
Krishnagigri Upavan
. Later in 1981 it was changes to Borivali National Park. Here we saw a miniature model showing whole of SGNP and its division. SGNP had an area of 103.02sq km which mostly is covered by mixed deciduous trees. We then were taken on a nature trail.
We even come to know that this forest consisted of 44 different type of animals, 300 types of birds (Including Migratory Birds), 120 types of amphibians, 20 types of snakes. It also includes 152 types of Butterflies even more than Great Britain, which had only 58 types of Butterflies. We followed our guide, gaining knowledge about trees and discovering in scattered bushes the most unlikely creatures. At first we saw a Red silk cotton tree. Its wood is used for matchbox, flower used as a vegetable by tribal people, fruit for making cotton and thorn as a cream. We even saw “Dagadful” its scientific name is Lichen, which is used as a spice and many more such plants.
After the trail we ere led towards NIC. Where we were shown slide show of conversations project on it’s own kind, followed by interactive sessions. We then saw a film on Man eaters of Mangroves which motivated us to think about all the flora and fauna around us. We left SGNP with full spirits, enlightened and enriched.
