Science and peace

Henry Becquerel could not have an inimical idea of destroying the whole world and thus be Robinson Crusoe when he discovered the properties of Uranium; but it is the coterie of the people at the helm of affairs determining the fate of the existing humanity and turning the science to fight with peace. None of the scientists has ever advocated to proliferate nuclear arsenal. But it is the people who commercialize the discoveries and inventions to meet their needs.

It was Thomas Alva Edison who discovered the electric bulb. The twenty first century child will not be in a position to imagine a world without electricity. If the supply of electric energy fails, the industrial wheel cannot rotate; the electric trains cannot run; the house-wife cannot cook. The result is confusion, chaos, drudgery, etc. There is no peace. For that state Edison or science cannot be blamed. Hence, it is not that disturbs peace. If science had disturbed peace, then man could have better remained in the jungles as tribes. Hence to say that science and peace can never go together is a purblind criticism.

It is rather man who has misused the scientific inventions. Enrico Fermi and Oppenheimer could have joined hands with Teller to deliver the first atom bomb. But definitely they were not the people who would pilot B-21 bombers to drop atom bomb at Nagasaki. Now, if any nation does not manufacture hydrogen bomb, it is human irrelevance. Thus, the ever increasing fear among both the nuclear and non nuclear groups, of human survival has no limitation. Again the result is multiplication of nuclear warheads.

Atomic science which has varied and multiple beneficial and developmental use detracts the attention of mankind one way or other, towards suicidal episode. Hence what is now needed is to make science a facet of many sided diamond of peace and to imbue a sense of brotherhood among humanity.

Science has perfected man`s knowledge. It has offered answers to many riddles. It has been proved that the Sun is a star around which other planets rotate in defined orbits. The space age has revealed that the moon is nothing but a child`s fascination. As a caricature goes, when God was asked what would be his move, he started answering without hesitation. "what can I think? My full concentration is on the man who is fast nearing me". Such is the far reaching development made by science. Such achievements must be utilized towards establishment of peace so that man can live in perfect harmony with nature and in peace.
