Life history of ants
Posted Date: 16-May-2009
There are almost about one million different kinds of family of the animal life which take breathe even without lungs and gills. One among them has a three section body with six legs and antennae.
In the ants colony there are three types of ants
1. Egg laying queens,
2. Male ants,
3. Working ants.
All of them do their respective jobs. The working ants build the colony for other ants. The queen lays egg which turns into larvae and later develops into an ant.
A typical ant colony is centered around one or more egg- laying queens. The smaller worker ants take care of the queen and the eggs. The male and the large queen ant both have wings. The male ants live for a shorter period only the queen begins a new colony.A typical queen ant will fly on her own and find a place to start a new colony. She has no need to fly now and so she sheds her wings.
1. If all the ants are combined and weighed then they weigh more than the weight of all the humans combined. It means that ants are the most numerous animal on earth.
2. They can carry a weight 10 to 20 times larger than their body weight. They work in teams so as to move or carry extremely huge things.
3. They have the largest brain among insects. Their brain is mushroom shaped and functions similar to the neurons of the human brains.
4. It is estimated that ants brain has a similar processing power as that of a Macintosh ii computer.
COLORED ANTS:(Colored dots on their back specifies their particular job.)
1. Yellow dotted ants are assigned for the work of cleaning.
2.green dotted ants are made to travel outside to get the food.
3.orange dotted ants would take care of the young ones.
After few days they change their jobs as they take on new skills.Some of the similarities between an ant and a human are;
Live stock farming- Ants herd aphids and milk them for nectar like food.
Cultivation- They grow underground gardens for food.
Children- Feeding young ones and taking lot of care for them.
Education- Teaching the young ants the tricks of trading.
Climate control- Maintaining a constant 77 degrees Fahrenheit for developing ants.
Armed forces- Raising an army of specialized soldier ants .
Security- Warding off other ants, insects and animals.
Engineering- Making tunnels from 2 directions and make them meet exactly mid way.
Flood control- Incorporate water traps to keep the rain away.

The life history of Ants is very interesting. It is so often found that we dont realise some of the life spans on smaller organisims like Ants. There are some people who also harm these ants and they sometime tend to bite also. Pouring turmeric or kerosine on the spot where ants are prevailing, will make to shift their place to other locality as they cannot penetrate these things.
There are also people who draw rangolies using rice powder which acts as food for the ants.
Overall unlike human beings, they too are smaller organisims which have life.
