In Lok Sabha election 2009, Congress led United Progressive Alliance did extremely well and they well themself not expecting this. After a long gap of 25 years the Congress led UPA was in the position to form a Government on its own without any external support.

Congress once again came in power but there were 20 sitting ministers who lost their seat and was bycotted by public. Out of 20 ministers 12 were of the parent party Congress and rest from its allies. Here are the list of Congress ministers who were unable to make their way to the Parliament.

Ministers of Congress Party losing election 2009

The ministers of the Congress Party who lost their berth to Parliament in Lok Sabha election 2009 were

Mani Shankar Aiyer

He had the the portfolio of Panchayati Raj and Northeast development ministry. He contested from Mayiladuthurai lok sabha constituency of Tamil Nadu but lost to O.S. Maniam by 49,336 votes.

Reason for loss
After delimitation the constituency covered some portion where there was a strong hold of PMK which shared votes of Congress. A newly formed Muslim party launched his candidate and many muslim voters went with that candidate and Mani Shankar Aiyer was not able to capitalize these votes thus losing in spite of being a minister.

E.V.K.S. Elangovan

He was Minister of state for textiles and contested from Erode lok sabha constituency of Tamil Nadu and was defeated by A. Ganeshamurthy of MDMK party.

Reason for loss
In 2004 he contested from Gobichettypalayam, this constituency was ceased after delimitation and Mr. E.V.K.S. Elangovan had to shift to Erode but a new party of Gounders which is a predominant community shared a lot of votes which was meant to be for congress, but being a new candidate from this constituency went to this new party.

M.H. Ambreesh

He was Minister of state for Information and Broadcasting. He contested from Mandya lok sabha constituency of Karnataka and lost to N. Cheluvaraya Swamy of JD (S) by 23,677 votes.

Reason for loss
In spite of being a nice and accepted candidate for last three times from this constituency, his stubborn attitude repelled the voters and anti incumbency factor played a major role in this constituency.

A.R. Antulay

He was Minister of minority affairs. He contested from Raigad lok sabha constituency of Maharashtra and lost by 1.46 lakh votes.

Reason for loss
There was negative campaign against A.R. Antulay as a non performer due to his old age. There were rebellions as a Congress MLA from the same assembly constituency fielder his wife as an independent candidate, causing a cross voting against Congress.

Renuka Choudhary

She was Minister of State for women and child development.
She contested from Khammam lok sabha constituency of Andhra pradesh, where Congress did well but she lost to Nageshwar Rao of Telugu Desam by a margin of 1.2 lakh votes.

Reason for loss
There were rebel candidates in this loksabha constituency and the congress votes were divided. The local units of Congress were too not very keen for Renuka Choudhary thus the result was a loss for her.

Shakeel Ahmed

Shakeel Ahmed was Minister of state for home. He contested from Madhubani lok sabha constituency of Bihar. He lost to Hukumdeo Narayan Yadav of BJP.

Reason for loss
After a decesion to go alone at Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal fielded a strong muslim candidate Abdul Bari Siddiqui, and the muslim votes was divided, between the two. This division of votes was so costly for Mr. Shakeel Ahmed that he stood third from even behind Abdul Bari Siddiqui of RJD.

Narayan Rathwa

He was Minister of state for Railways. He contested from Chhota Udaipur lok sabha constituency of Rajasthan and lost to Ramsinh Rathwa of BJP by 26,998 votes.

Reason for loss
He had a strong hold among tribals but addition of two semi urban segments into this constituency after delimitation rule has led to a loss as these segment had a strong hold for BJP.

Shanker Singh Vaghela

He was with the Minister of textiles. He contested from his old lok sabha constituency Panchmahal of Gujarat and lost to Prabhansinh Chouhan of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of merely 2,069 votes.

Reason for loss
An over confidence of winning. he was sure that he ignored to whoo muslim votes which was around 34,000 and went to two muslim candidates of smaller parties.

Rameshwar Oraon

He was Minister of State for tribal affairs. he contested from Lohardaga lok sabha constituency of Jharkhand and lost to Sudarshan Bhagat of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) by 1,36,34 votes.

Reason for loss
A strong candidate Chamra Linda contested as an independent leading to a split in anti BJP votes, which costed Rameshwar Oraon so much that he came third from this constituency even behind this independent candidate.

Chandra Sekhar Sahu

He was Minister of states for rural development. He contested from Berhampur lok sabha constituency of Orissa and lost to Siddhant Mohapatra of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) by 66,566 votes.

Reason for loss
This constituency is Naveen Patnaik,s favorite constituency and had developed a lot here. Other factor was the glamour factor. Siddhant Mohapatra is a film star and the glamour along with Naveen Patnaik's popularity was the reason of loss.

Mahabir Prasad

He was the Minister of Micro, small and medium enterprises. He contested from Bansgaon lok sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh and lost to Kamlesh Paswan of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

Reason for loss
In spite of an unexpected good result in Uttar Pradesh by Congress, Mahabir Prasad lost due to his unpopular image as he was alleged by a murder charge at Bansgaon. This affected so much that he stood third even after Bahujan Samaj party.
